James Toney signs multi-fight agreement with UFC

Dana White is doing this to make a fool out of James Toney and Boxing. He knows that Toney is done and can't possibly do anything now at the age of 41. This helps the UFC in the battle against Boxing. He's the biggest name they've had from boxing and one of the worst for wear. Gullible fans would eat this up as MMA supposedly shows its superiority over Boxing.

 

Keyword is not was. He got better and destroyed Mir in the rematch. He was able to take him down because he used to be a wrestler.

 

Toney is not a puncher for a heavyweight anyway and if someone is bullrushing you to take you down it is very unlikely that he would just ko them. We all know even the top UFC fighters don't earn much comparable to top level boxers so i wonder how much $$$$$$$$ Toney will receive for this contract.
AS others have said i would love it if they matched Toney with Kimbo Slice.

 

toney should be fighting at 205, he was pretty light in his last match so i dont think its unlikely

 

Dana dosen't want to humiliate James...he wants to make money. He'll get james some fights that will give him a chance and then gradually improve his comp where he can generate a lot of buzz and $$$$. He'll put him in there with a legit HW at the end of his contract and the fight will be HUGE. Toney will probably loose and Dana will be able to win two ways.....he'll get the money on James Toney's name and hit boxing as a whole with the "MMA is a superior sport to Boxing" line.

James must not have invested his money wisely.

 

Randy Couture would kill Toney.

Randy doesnt fight to please the fans.. he fights to win. He would grind him against the cage.. take him down.. and bore everyone to death.


Randy Couture takes 2 kinds of fights. Ones he knows he will win.. and ones that will give him a huge payday. This is both... and I wouldn't be surprised if its Toney's first fight.

Lesnar wasn't a 40 year old, fat, washed up boxer was he though? Not to mention Lesnar had a year of MMA training before his debut.

Maybe Toney would beat a few people if they are **** and just stand with him, but even then I think a decent MMA striker would beat him if they just stood at distance and kicked the **** out of his legs. He's nothing more than an attraction to put bums in seats (although that probably was what Lesnar was in the first place). I'm a fan of Toney's but he's gone on long enough in boxing there's no need to start MMA now. Just my opinion.

 

Ray's style is more suited to MMA striking, he doesn't duck low to slip shots, shoulder roll on the ropes or turn his head to take the sting off of blows, he faces you and tries to knock you out.

If James decides to do that, nobody will be able to stand up with him, but he'll have to change his MO to get it done. As far as going to the ground, forget about it, he'll get murdered. I'm close to a purple belt, and I would tap James over and over and over at will, I'm pretty sure, let alone those animals in the ring. I would expect that White will match him up with pure strikers at first, and tell them (without telling them directly, if u get my meaning) not to take the fight to the ground.

Bad move..and all those saying Toney V Slice....I think if that ever happens Slice will do what he did when he humiliated Mercer - take down and choke out. See even someone as raw as Slice was smart enough to know that he couldn't stand up with Mercer so he didnt even try..he knew that Mercer had no ground game so he went it and thought I'll take him down and choke him out! And thats what he did! Slice never went in there hopign to trade punches with Mercer...and so here with Toney its gonna be the same show! Take the man out of his own game and he's a fish out of water. Bad bad move. He should just retire...but his ego wont let him.

 

**** no, he's not gonna pay him for a five fight deal and then feed him to Couture right off the bat. Kimbo Slice would probably be a good first fight, assuming White strongly suggests to Kimbo that he not go to the ground. Both mean, tough guys, good in a press conference, and Toney would smack the **** out of him standing up.

 

UFC contracts arent guaranteed. They don't have to give him 5 fights.
