I've come to the conclusion that Roberto Duran would knock out Monzon

    During my time here at ESB, i learned some facts about this great Panamanian warrior:

    • He beat Hagler, but got shafted by the judges;

    • He knocked out a ****ing horse, man. A HORSE!!! If you can knock out a horse then your greatness is unbound and the laws of physics are but trivialities to you. Ha, in your face, Jim Jeffries! You thought carrying a 300lbs deer on your back for 25 miles was enough??

    • He knocked out Hearns faster than Hagler did, if he didn't get sucker punched by Emmanuel Steward, or was motivated;

    • He never lost to De Jesus because he was green, having only 31 pro fights, however, he beat him twice in return matches and once during his pro debut, in an ESB inspired fantasy fight i just thought of;

    • Kirkland Laing was a nobody and never beat Duran since Roberto was thinking of Panamanian delicious empanadas and tacos, and didn't want to win;

    • El radar, see last point;

    • He really is 3-0 against Leonard. That ****** wouldn't fight him the second time and had the guts to take an immediate rematch! As if Duran could be in shape for that. As you could see on film, Duran was at least 190lbs of fat on fight night and was not up for clowning. If Leonard stuck to what they were supposed to do, boxing, then Duran would've won. Sorry, but if you get stomach cramps you're not supposed to continue for the world title. The third fight was a robbery by the way.

    • When Duran was past his prime, and again (or still) not motivated, he still managed to beat the p4p king Barkley. This legendary middleweight was almost impossible to beat, despite 6 men having done so already, and this is clearly a better win than Spinks' over undefeated, 16 succesful heavyweight title defences having Larry Holmes, as i've just learned;

    So, with that knowledge, it's become quite clear that Monzon vs Duran is a mismatch. I'm picking Duran by 12th round TKO, and that's a stomach cramp having, unmotivated Duran, mind you. Just to level the playing field.

    Does this man look like he could knock out a HORSE?? Of course not!

    Stupid thread IMO.

    An objective poster would see through Durans silly excuses/reasons. There are nuthuggers for every fighter, but personally I feel Durans lofty ranking (I have him at no,6) is more than justfied. Especially when you watch him and realise how great he was.

    ChrisPontius, you are a measured and intelligent poster; I'm surprised to see that you started this thread pal :good

    Anyone can knock out a horse.
    Horses cant take a punch.

    It's not a nice thing to do though.

    I laughed.

    Duran gets a free pass on the Classic Forum, and I've been saying that for years. I still appreciate him, but I don't see how anyone can possibly deny he gets special treatment. It's a fact. Fleaman, it's a fact.

    He gets the correct treatment based on his incredible ability (plain to see) and the fact that, despite an inconsistent period, he came back an proved his skillet in a higher weight. His resume is stellar as well.

    Barkley-No ATG. But a formidable fighter when Duran beat him.

    He had incredible ability, but that's not what we're talking about here, Flea. We're talking about his excuses and how people actually put stock in them. It's not strange for fighters to make excuses, we tend to ignore them, but we actually have people saying, "Duran was out of shape for Leonard who wanted an immediate rematch because he knew Duran couldn't cut down". Leonard said that, but Duran looked fine on fight night. Scratch that, he looked perfect on fight night.

    Don't get me started with El Radar, and Hearns. He was weighed drained both times, did you know?

    I admit, Duran looked flat as a pancake against El Radar, but I can't deal with all the other excuses.

    Regardless of the losses, he still has the ability and resume to justify a top tenr anking IMO
