if de la hoya was BLOWN UP when he fought hopkins, shouldn't hopkins have been WEIGHT DRAINED when he fought de la hoya? i think it's a legitimate victory for hopkins, but what do you think?
At the time Hops was famous for being at or near fighting weight 360 out of 365 days a year. Not weight drained when you are a 20 defense middle champ moving down 2 lbs
i see what you mean. but the fight happened at a 154 pounds and he didn't even balloon back up on fight night from what i recall. not to mention he was almost 40 years old then. it just seems like his victories are diminshed without considering the advantages his opponent had. if he lost to trinidad or de la hoya, he's old and weight drained, but since he won, they're blown up welterweights. just not following the logic here.
hopkins went easy on dlh. The whole thing there was that dlh was a finer boxer, so hopkins went in there trying to outbox dlh. when he finally put in some muscle behind a punch, he dropped him. He gave his all to tito. I give tito props for slugging it out with hopkins
Yep. This is true. Unwatchable fight. Hopkins made it completely obvious with his sparring match intensity. He babied the **** out of De La Hoya. On topic Hopkins was drained. He looked horrifically gaunt, and weighed in at 156. That's nothing for a guy over six feet carrying as much muscle as he, and at 38/39 years old.
Yea, hopkins gets all the credit in the world from me. He weight in at 156, DLH at 155. In addition Hopkins put his belts on the line despite the fight being at a catchweight. And he was old as **** to be coming down in weight. It's a good win, particularly since he stopped DLH.
He could have ended the night earlier. Watch the fight Tito was out on his feet in the 2nd. But I must give it up to Tito b/c he still kept coming forward.
I agree with half. When he boxed DLH he was losing. He began to push DLH around and used his size, started turning things around, but DLH was still getting the better of it until the ko. I think Hopkins was more careful of Tito though, kept his distance, moved like DLH did against Tito. I think only at the end did Hopkins go in for the kill but before that he was staying away while scoring, clear away.
As to the original post, every fighters different. We have to think of their optimum weight and how far they are removed. DLH's optimum weight was probably 140-147.
