Defensive masters ..Whitaker vs Mayweather

I was going to say Whitaker...but the 138 pound limit is really making me rethink that now.

 

Really? Both were better a the lower weights. Whitakers best was 135, Mayweathers 130. So, I think this is even a slight advantage for Sweet Pea.

Whitaker edges Mayweather. He was the greatest defensive technician since Pep himself. And if his record is any indication, he is far less ...insecure. Whitaker had none of the Floyd's reluctance and that matters in the end.

 

I'd pick Whitaker but if I was a gambling man I would hedge my bet. Whitaker is the better boxer on both the defensive and offensive ends. However Maywether is very close in defense and is very good at setting traps.

 

Hey, Burt. How are you? It's been a while. I would pick Pernell Whitaker to win in a competitive contest. At 135-140 lbs., Whitaker was the better fighter. Mayweather is better filled out at 147 lbs., in my opinion, so I could see him getting the better of it at welterweight. A fight between those two, prime to prime, would be a boxing fan's fight. I don't mean a brawl. I mean a defensive, skillfull execution of the sweet science. I would love to see it.

 

Whitaker fought and beat the best. Mayweather has had a meticulously constructed career, despite the machinations of which he arguably lost to Castillo.

Head to head, Whitaker beats him badly.

Stonehand, I agree with your choice of Whitaker over Mayweather by decision..I was very impressed with this point...Pernell, at the past peak age of 33 years old,tackled and survived two tough bouts with great large Welterweights as Felix Trinidad, and Oscar De La Hoya,both in their primes...I am sure Mayweather , past his prime could or would have never accomplished this feat of Whitaker....

I believe Whitaker while holding an advantage as a southpaw, was also a great elusive boxer...But I cannot put Whitaker in the same class as Willie Pep, who I saw in MSG, 1943...Pernell,while great had only about forty six bouts in his career...Pep in his amazing career,fought 241 fights, against so many great fighters,and really losing 4 times,once to Lightweight toughie Sammy The Clutch Angott, and of course to the cruel punching Sandy Saddler...Incidentally I am convinced that the Willie Pep , before his terrible plane crash in 1947, would have licked Saddler handidly...Pep lost a lot of his great speed, after the accident in 1947...I am sure that Pernell, boxing 241 bouts as a lightweight in that great competitive era of the 1940's, could have never come near of Willie Pep's amazing career record...He was a marvel to watch at his peak...I could attest to that....

 

I'd say that Whitaker being a southpaw is also an advantage in favour of him. Mayweather has never looked too impressive against southpaws in my opinion.
