Defensive masters ..Whitaker vs Mayweather

Put Whitaker in an era of lightweights the calibre of the featherweights Pep fought in his time and make him fight 240 times and he'd do just fine.

I can't see Whitaker getting ko'ed by a Sandy Saddler either, past prime or not.

 

I'd worry about his hands though. Not that Pep didn't have his hand troubles.

He could probably beat half the guys Pep beat one handed if he had to, as Willie probably did himself. Assuming they are lightweight equivalents of course.

That simply means that Whitaker style has longevity. Not all great fighters are effective after a certain age.

But Mayweather being 32 now, it is conceivable that he can beat anyone from 147 down.

As for the OP

Pernell probably edges it, in what could be a difficult fight to score.

 

Whitaker, untouchable in his prime.

Pernell would probably edge it. At lightweight, his superior workrate would make a big difference.
Not a landslide decision but a clear one.

 

Whitaker. Just another class of fighter really.

 

Hand injuries may shorten his career and he wouldn't be able to fight as many times as Pep if he injured his hands consistently. Whitaker seemed to injure his hands in every other fight of his.

I think Mayweather is presented some stylistical problems against southpaws though. His defensive system doesn't work as well and he is forced to be more aggressive, which makes him easier to hit. He could get away with this against Judah, Corley but they are no Pernell Whitaker.

Mayweather is no Bernard Hopkins when it comes to facing southpaws.

I'd go with whitaker but it'd be a close call but his overall ability and style edges this 1. Floyd's speed was better and Whitaker had problems with faster guys like McGirt, Delahoya and Hurtado. FMJ had problems with the similar Judah early, although not as much as some think. Overall its Whitakers footwork, movement, jab, radar and that probably edge it. Although I'm not sure his radar like defense isnt more susceptable to such a fast sharp shooter

 

I honestly cannot see any advanatges that Floyd would hold in a Sweet Pea match, though it would get closer as they move up to Welter.

Pea can box, he can fight. He has a consistant nd precise jab, and a good chin. If he can't box Floyd he'll just pressure him. Floyd doesn't have the workrate to keep up with Pea. Even at the lower weights, Pea would have too much.

The matchup gets talked up a bit, but we're talking about a different class of fighter, on film and in resume.
