Even if an opponent stands toe to toe, i'm not sure if he can win. At 5'9 he's a tiny heavyweight vs those roided up MMA'ers (wait, Toney used them as well), and Toney is not a big puncher at all. A geriatric Ray Mercer could save the day with his power, what's Toney gonna do, a shoulder roll while he's being taken down? This is all wrong. :-(

JT will be the first person to hold both boxing and Ufc heavyweight champ. I love Toney but all he has to do is fall on this guys and not let them up

This is a very ignorant response.

James Toney is a boxer. But he is a complete MMA novice.

Now, even if he gets an MMA trainer and trains like a dynamo for a few months, is he then going to be ready to compete at world level in MMA???

Let me turn the tables - if Freddie Roach took a world-class wrestler (who had never competed in MMA so had no striking training or ability), and taught him boxing for a few months, would that guy then be ready to compete at world level in boxing??? Obviously not.

James Toney isn't going to start out like a boxer, having his first fight against a bum then steadily increasing the quality of his opponent over 20 or 30 fights before he had learned enough to try for a world title. Dana's plan will be for him to have 1 or 2 fights against mediocre gatekeepers, then throw him in with a big boy. I think James will get bludgeoned in his 1st fight unless he fights the most incredibly hopeless bum that ever bummed, but that will be the plan at the moment.

There is no way in hell that an overweight 41 year old can become so proficient in various martial arts in a few months that he will be able to compete with MMA professionals who are skilled in different disciplines and have been competing in their sport for years upon years.

It is without doubt the worst idea I've ever heard in my entire existence.

True. It doesn't make it right though, and it certainly doesn't mean it isn't going to end with a proud 41 year old sportsman being viciously pulverized by a professional mixed martial artist.

Tim Sylvia would get utterly decimated quickstyle by Lesnar, Mir, Velasquez, Dos Santos, Carwin, or any of the top guys. As would Ray Mercer. As would James Toney.

this looks just as bad for the UFC as it does for boxing....why the F would they want 40 something year old boxers to feed on? its pathetic....then again, i think their last ufc main even both guys were in their mid 40s. UFC is a cartoon organization with the same clowns fighting each other time and time again...its a league....a fight club.....the best mma fighter in the world doesnt even fight in the ufc....

That fight wouldn't last 20 seconds.

If he fights Kimbo or Liddell, then sure I can see him winning because he'd tap that chin.

But if he fights a quality mixed martial artist who knew simply to go for the low kicks and take him to the ground and bully him once there, it'll be embarrassing.

Toney is disrespecting boxing, doing this when he could be fighting actively as a heavyweight boxer and make decent money.

I love watching Toney's fights IN BOXING. He isn't dirt poor I don't think and isn't provinganything by doing this. I hope he backs out soon and I don't know......become a ref?

 @ Toney as a ref.

    "sumbitchstophoinhim"

    fighter: "what?"

Toney couldn't make himself clear to someone who has worked with paralyzed patients for 30 years.

How?? Even at lightheavyweight he wasn't a big hitter, and now he's going up against some heavyweight. Could he knock them out in a boxing match? Undoubtedly, but MMA is a different sport and his counter-punching style won't work when he's being taken down or kicked.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lesnar vs Toney as his first fight. He deserves it.

I think Lesanar could pound his fatass right through the octogon to the ground below.

Because Liddell is shot to **** and would probably try to duke it out with James, thus getting smashed out quick.

Kimbo idk, I really dont know what Kimbo has to offer, but if he takes Toney down thats probably game set and match.

Toney can land some nasty right hands with those small gloves though, he'd take Liddells head off.
