Boxing Stories That Would Make Good Films

    Boxing has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Hollywood execs, independant and mainstream filmmakers and film fans alike, but the surface of conveying some of boxing's biggest moments on the silver screen has hardly been scratched, IMO. There is a huge potential for even more fantastic boxing films to be made if filmmakers were to delve further into the fantastic history of the sport and some of it's most epic, important, iconic and pertinent paradigms and stories.

    Personally, I think that there is one film crying out to be made: one that centres on the events surrounding the rematch between Schmelling and Louis which eventually climaxes with the said fight.

    Name some moments from boxing's long history that you think deserve to be told to a greater audience and would also make for a good few hours in the cinema:good.

    Kirlang Laing (beats Duran, goes on year long bender, ends up on the streets)

    Battling Siki (born in Senegal, lived in France, beat the French hero for title as a big underdog and in moved Parisian high society)

    The Jeffries-Johnson fight (racial tensions running high)

    Medrick Taylor ('nuff said, sad story)

    Personally I would love to write a screenplay concerning Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran. There's so much scope that it'd be a good HBO mini-drama. 12 episodes or something.
    A decent film about Tyson is crying out to be made. But that needs to be in the right hands and avoids ending up on movies4men or something.
    A life story of Gatti, a life story of Arguello... there's tons of material out there.

    A lot of the old times fighters were hard fighters, drinkers and womanisers theres a wealth of stuff there..Greb, McCoy etc....

    Not so much a historical one but i would imagine there will be a Pac film out sometime in the future.

    Born into poverty, working on the streets to buy food for the family at 5, his father cooking the family dog they were so poor, finding boxing, early knockout defeats, winning the world title, finding his 'master', moving up in weight, winning more world titles, PED allegations, a nations hero etc etc.

    And there will be so much more to come with his political career and potentially the biggest fight in boxing history against Floyd.

    The problem with a film on Pac is that it'll probably be made in Phillipines for $5000.

    Some fantastic suggestions. Really like the mini-series idea, Shaun- that would be a great watch and the material is definately there for a series as long as that. A life story on Duran's life before he took up boxing and during his glory years would be brilliant as well. Some good suggestions as well, Gaz:good.

    Which stories do you think would grab the attention of the mainstream as opposed to the hardcore fans, though?

    Monzon would be ****ing brilliant - great fighter but flawed outside the ring (like so many others). Domestic abuse, **** loads of affairs and murdered his wife.

    Hollywood couldn't make that **** up

    The Resto/ Panama Lewis incident as would make a good drama as would the Ring ratings fixing scandal in the 70's, that had big business, Howard Hughes. the FBI , Don King, etc involved

    You've obviously not seen the Rocky V out-takes, Ish. It was actually going to be a good film before they intentionally made it ****.

    You are correct, however, about the Monzon suggestion and his name would be enough on it's own rather for a film title rather than something overtly dramatic.

    No-one has mentioned B-Hop yet:think.

    I think a story, if done right, of Buster Douglas could grip non-boxing fans in the same way as Rocky did.
