Leonard knew of Duran's habit of ballooning between fights, so he ordered his people to make an early rematch, knowing Duran would drain himself making weight this is something SRL said years after the fight not something Duran and his people came up with to justify his loss, anyone with a pair of eyes can see that the Duran of the second fight wasnt the same fiery Duran of Montreal.
That's not an excuse though. It's pretty much factual. Now that doesn't excuse Duran of course for quitting during the fight, blowing up in weight, allowing himself to get systematically picked apart and frustrated and then coming up with hokey excuses afterwards (stomach cramps etc etc) but it's a fact that Leonard ordered a quick rematch because he knew Duran would kill himself making weight. Leonard then basically put on a brilliant exhibition in both boxing and showmanship which oft-times gets underrated by people who focus on Duran "quitting". To only talk about Duran "quitting" pretty much indirectly downplays the fact that he quit because Leonard was basically runing circles around him.
What facts does he need to straighten out? You claimed that the excuse was made up by Duran, when Leonard has admitted himself in interviews his strategy for getting Duran in the ring at the worst possible time for him. Duran's excuse was stomach cramps (i.e. he had to take a ****). If that was indeed the case, it's pretty obvious why a fighter wouldn't perform to the best of his abilities. Be that as it may, it's a bit of a cop-out as a Duran supporter to fully back those claims. I saw a clearly less determined and willing fighter in the ring that night, likely for a combination of the reasons given. That is why I choose not to hold the fight in as high as regard. Leonard was doing little outside of clowning and spoiling, it's not like he was giving Duran a lesson. Duran was just out of spirits and refused to be ****ed with like that. A shitty gesture to quit in a fight like that, and one that haunts him to this day, but to assume he was in prime form and just decided to quit like that doesn't really hold up, at least not in my opinion.
stay off the drugs , they can make you say strange things. SRL matches RJJ speed and is so much more a better technical fighter , roy runs out of ideas and is stopped. Whitaker fought only two men of class in 147 category and lost both , and he is small at 5 6 , nowhere near as good as a 5 10 wilfred benitez , and we all saw what ray did there. stoppage again. PBF , too small again and loses every round. People should watch more boxers from the past , and not just that last couple of decades.
1. Roy never ran out of ideas in his prime. I doubt Leonard stops him. 2. Styles make fights, not measurements. 3. I doubt Floyd loses every single round to any fighter in history up to the weights he's fought at. 4. People should stop glorifying boxers from the past, particularly those from beyond the last couple of decades.
Nah, Robinson is completer overall. The main difference of these wo is Robinson is more offensive minded, Leonard more defensive. Leonard is lighter on his feet, Robinson has the better jab and one thing especially: where Leonard throws flurries of armpunches, Robinson throws combinations and in every punch is his whole bodyweight, and he is still as fast as Leonard! that's what edges it for me. Perhaps you shouldn't glorify fighters of recent times ... this works both ways, dude.
1. Not going to bother getting into particular details about it, really. Your opinion is fair enough, but I just disagree. I don't think Robinson is more complete than Leonard whatsoever. 2. I don't. I judge all fighters on equal criteria. I don't care what era they're from.
