I always think fighters like Kessler and Froch deserve alot of credit for being willing to take there titles on the road. Kessler defended away to Calzaghe (unification), Mundine, Haussler and Ward and Froch defended away to Taylor and is defending away next to Kessler.
But do you think Kessler and Froch deserve more credit than the other super 6 contestants? The other contestants had everything to gain while Kessler and Froch going in as belt holders had everything to lose.
Bute didnt go in with his title and Pavlik seemed against the idea of such a difficult tournament saying risk/reward.
So do you think Froch and Kessler deserve more credit than the other contestants?

I think they do going into the competition as belt holders

All three Europeans deserve credit, those being Kessler, Abraham and Froch. But I hear what you are saying about Kessler and Froch and nevertheless, let's not forget that Arthur also gave up his belt at 160, moved up and is doing very well so far. The reward at the end of the day is exposure-publicity in the United States.

And this tournament is not complete with out the other two title holders being Bute and Robert Stieglitz, whom ever the hell he is lol but it's still one hell of a tournament and I love it.

This tournament is like the Contender on Steroids. Also the fight camp 360 series are very good.

SHO stepped up and out smarted HBO again,

Not really, I think everyone has a lot to gain from the tournament and in some ways other fighters have every bit as much(or more to lose). Just my opinion.

they signed on for 3 guaranteed excellent paydays, no matter how they perform. And if they perform well, another one or possibly two additional paydays. They are expanding their audience and potential long term earnings potential tremendously. Would have been a bad move not to accept the invitation, so no i don't think they should get anymore credit.

Yeah but the other 4 fighters came into the competion without a SMW title having nothing to lose other then in some cases an undefeated record. Sure they're getting exposure and a payday but you can often get that with a world title. But Kessler and Froch came in as champs not contenders and having a belt to lose, when the competition is over and the winner is holding the 2 belts, its unlikely the former champs are going to be the next defence after this competion, thats why I think that Froch and Kessler deserve more credit

Not really. It was either enter this tournament, or feast on bums for two years while the guys in the tournament win accolades. That's the unfortunate situation Bute is in now. Every fighter gets some home, and some away fights, and any belts lost would likely make their way back to you if you won the whole shebang. And winning the tournament is a much bigger accomplishment than holding an alphabet strap anyway.

Good post. You could also view it that Taylor, having come off 2 harsh KO's in the last few years going in had a lot to lose by signing up to face prolonged and intense competition. (Which ultimately proved to be too much after only 1 fight.)

Going in, you could also argue that Ward and especially Dirrell were not ready for this kind of a step up in competition this early in both their pro careers. This could end up putting a major dent in Dirrell's career. He could go in undefeated and end up coming out with 3 losses against far stiffer comp than he would have normally faced.

But like you said, the tourney brings more prestige and most likely more money fights than holding the belt alone. It works for all those involved IMO.(except Taylor)

The thing is why are we giving fighters credit for doing their job?

Says a lot about the state of the game at the moment.

Your right and I agree, but in my opinion there was more at stake for Froch and Kessler

It's hard to give credit to a guy for doing his job, but it's been such a long time since champions behaved like champions and fought the best out there that I do. Too many guys hoard the belt for the payday instead of laying it on the line.

BTW, I hope Froch gets KTFO!

Disagree here. Jermain Taylor's career may or may not have been unmercifully put to an end, that was something bigger than a belt to lose. Dirrell still seemed pretty green out there in his first fight against Froch, he could hypothetically hurt his career before it took off(so to speak). Bottom line is everyone is putting something big on the line and all fighters deserve pretty equal credit.

You forgot the most important. Money and real fame if they win the tournament.
