Some of you believe that Toney was brought in to the ufc to make boxing "look bad"...Others think it's bad if Toney wins...(because it would somehow show that boxing > mma)... FIRST: Toney didn't sign a one fight deal. Dana is first and foremost a fight promoter. Meaning that to him , Toney = high ratings. (just like Lesnar or Kimbo)... When Lesnar wins his fights...It doesn't mean wwe > mma. Nobody gives a **** about that & certainly not Dana because it's in his best interest that Lesnar keeps winning because he has a huge fanbase. It's also in Dana's best interest to see Toney WIN his fights..(and he also signed a multi-fight deal...) If Dana really wanted to prove a point or to humiliate boxing , it would've been a 1 fight deal against a top mma contender...(someone who would've taken Toney on the ground...end of story)... But this isn't the case. Toney has several fights on his conract...And obviously whatever you may think about Toney...(washed up or legit..)..You can't deny that there's going to be a huge "curiosity" factor. Both mma & boxing fans will be watching his fights... Dana is gonna milk the cash cow as much as he can... (just like he's trying to do with Kimbo slice)...Keep in mind , about 2 years ago Dana used to say that Kimbo would never go to the ufc and that he was a "thug" etc...etc... then as time went by...he was changing his tune..saying things like: "kimbo has to win tuf if he wants to go to the ufc..".... Then Kimbo lost... but it didn't change ****...they found him an opponent he could beat and they've managed to impose this guy...why ? because Kimbo is a cash cow. You guys have to understand...If Toney wins his fights...it won't matter because mma is the winner in the end...the ppvs & high ratings will go to the ufc...not boxing...Toney will be labeled as a "ufc fighter" who's specialty happens to be boxing. Whenever they speak about a fighter who comes from another sport , they just praise his technical background and that's it... and this goes not just for the ufc but for other orgs too...When Fedor wins a fight...it doesn't mean "sambo" > "mma" ... MMA is like a platform where all types of fighters can test what they know best to win a fight... Since Toney will be fighting under mma rules...he'll be forced to use moves that would be illegal under boxing rules...This alone , already makes the boxing vs mma debate worthless... Unless toney manages to ko all his opponents in a matter of seconds...(i doubt they're all THAT ****ing stupid...but you never know)...He'll have to defend himself from takedowns , sub attempts , kicks , elbows , grappling (judo , bjj , wrestling)..etc...
I generally agree but we'll have to see what dana has in store for him, my money is on a toney vs kimbo for his first fight
One other detail....If Dana wants to both prove a point and milk the cash cow...Maybe , toney's first opponent will be a top grappler....(he'll make sure that toney loses his first fight....Like Lesnar did against Mir)... Then they'll give him washed up fighters (like they did to lesnar...vs Heath Herring , which was his 2nd opponent)...then slowly build him as a ufc fighter... Or maybe i'm dead wrong and dana is a sadistic ******* and will just find a way to make toney lose 3 fights in a row...then tell him to go back to boxing... But seriously folks...it's in dana's (and the ufc) best interest....to milk the cash cow as long as possible....Toney = huge ratings. Just like Kimbo or Lesnar. Dana knows that both boxing & mma fans will be watching his fights.
They'll put him in with a guy that has only had one or two fights who is barely qualified to be considered a mixed martial artist (which to be frank, neither is Toney obviously). There will be plenty of no-name fighters who will be willing to take a few $/£ to lose to Toney.
Who was that Aussie guy who lost to Eddie Sanchez a couple of years ago? Bring him in, he was ****ing horrible. Either that or Tank Abbott.
****, I'd fight him for a couple grand, tlel them I'm an amateur wrestler and bjj player who boxes on the side, one punch from toney I go down, he looks great and I get money and a free trip.
He won't get a can I guarantee that, toney has already called out kimbo and couture and Nelson have expressed interest. He'll get a good fighter right away.
Then that leaves us two options. Toney gets someone barely qualified to compete and gets a KO, or he gets someone half decent and gets taken down and stopped whilst looking out of this depth on the ground. The only other option is if someone decent is a macho idiot and tries to beat him standing, then Toney has a good chance.
Couple of points; Is Toney really a 'cash-cow'? How many MMA fans have even heard of him? How many tickets does he even sell in boxing? Two. He could beat some low level guys whose only wrestling is through MMA - even Kimbo might be a step far (though he could beat him conceivably) - but I don't see how him beating absolute cans will be a money maker or have anyone interested. Three. Weird signing
I don't get this at all, toney is finished in boxing and has been for 3 years at the top level, he only doing this because top Cable networks HBO and Showtime have no interest in him at all any more, he is washed up and lazy fighter
Pretty much all the contracts become one fight contracts, at the UFC's discretion, in the case of a loss; I don't believe Toney's is any different.
Lesnar lost his first fight & stayed...Toney isn't Lesnar but he's a potential cashcow... He's here to stay. (for the duration of his contract)..Unless of course he decides to abandon the mma experience.
