Smoger no doubt, he stays out of the way and really let's the fighters work. Tony weeks is another ref that has impressed me, he seems to have a ring intelligence that is lacking in most refs.
kenny bayliss and tony weeks are great (although bayliss should have let cotto fight on for a few more minutes :hey) and mickey vann is the best in britain :deal
Protect yourself at all times. #1) Vic Drakulich: he never takes the decision away from the fighter and can keep control of a ring, even if a riot is in the making. #2) Steve Smoger: I'm biased because he's really classy and is a fun guy to have a conversation with. No ego; he'll even give the time of day to the drunk MMA fan who hated him for breaking the clinches. #3) Kenny Bayless: Everytime I see him in the ring, I pray for 10+ knockdowns because the way he does a count (eyes all bugged out, down on the mat like he's refereeing a collegic wrestling match, shoving his hands in the fighter's face, and yelling loud enough for people on the street to hear) absolutely makes my night.
I remember that fight. Double S actually acccompanied Atlas on his fight breakdown for the broadcast that night.. and there Smoger was taking a shot on the wiskers that night from a heavyweight. Ahh, the job of a boxing official, how glorious.. lol Anyway, the answer is Steve Smoger. Followed closely by Raul Caiz Jr. which is a very underrated ref since no one ever talks about him. Sidenote: Don't know why so many people praise Bayless. Like many top refs over the years, he interrupts the action way too much and gets involved where he shouldn't be. If Smoger has taught us one thing it's that if you stay out of the way and let the fighters fight, they will fight.
