asking this in today's terms isnt really fair to oscar but i'll play along. oscar has one of the best chins in this era so i don't know if paul could stop him UNLESS oscar took the fight simply to boost gbp and bring in some $$. yeah he sat on his stool against pac w/ track marks in his arm by roach's own admission. but paul could probably just outwork him at this point. paul is easy to hit and a prime odlh could take advantage of that but i just don't think he could now. paul would outwork him to a wide UD w/ oscar making it interesting every now and then w/ a big left.
Oscar prime takes Williams out early. The Oscar that fought Mayorga and PBF would stop Williams in the 6th. Williams takes too many left hands, he's never been hit with a left like Oscars. And Williams doesn't use his height for advantage, he throws looping punches a fighter like Oscar would see coming, and Williams will eventually decide to trade, all which makes me think Oscar would ko him. Now however Oscar is a retired millionaire. I don't think he'd be there mentally. And like you say he swells easily now.
Maybe the reason Oscar swells easily is the same that Cotto swells easily ??? ... in both cases this has something to do with PAC's punches? So do you think Williams would be able to make Oscar swell easily as well?
When you hit 35+ or so, you're more likely to swell. Cotto had such significant facial damage leading up to the Pac fight, he might as well have been 35+.
I wasn't so willing to say Oscar stops him as the more likely because as shaky as he looked at 160 with Martinez, he also seems to have an very good beard at 147 with Margobricko, etc.. But the more I think about it, the more I lean towards you on that. He really hasn't fought anybody with the kind of shot ODLH has with the left hook. I think if Quintana had a shot like that in the first fight, old Paul may have been in some trouble.
Don't know, Forbes cracked him enough to swell him a bit and crack a cheekbone, in a fight that DLH dominated all rounds. I really don't know what DLH has left. I mean his last 2 important fights were against the past 2 p4p#1 fighters in the world. How would Hoya do against more mere mortal champions? I'm sure he asks himself that everyday and if he don't know the answer then I sure as hell don't either.
I would more expect that in both cases the reason for swelling is that PAC has exceptional punch at WW and it will be hard to repeat what PAC has done. Sure Willimas may score UD because of activity and conditioning, but his accuracy and punch strength is not at PAC's level and he will not be able to do as much damage to Oscar to KO him or force him to quit again.
Oscar's swelling vs Pac came from the Manilla Ice, the right hook. A punch not commonly thrown with great success. Pac's right hook is amazing. Poor dude, I always feel bad for Oscar with that image. This content is protected
coming from a guy with an oscar avatar. DLH gets knocked out by a former flyweight.....i think he would be in big trouble vs a guy like williams....see, prob is, DLH very seldom fought anyone bigger than him or equal in size...ala floyd mayweather
You misunderstand me. I'm not downplaying Pac's punching ability or saying any featherfisted guy is going to make you swell up. But, come on. Oscar's been hit by much heavier handed men and walked away from the fights looking like he was in nothing more than a gym workout. Then a fairly light hitting Forbes marked him up. And Cotto was never one to be stingy with his own blood, but did you see the swelling? I'm talking about swelling, not cutting and bleeding or having your equilibrium off. Just swelling. It is a well accepted fact of life that as fighters age, there is a higher and higher risk of them swelling, even if they were never prone to it and they were proven to not be prone to it against big punchers. Nor did I make an issue about Williams being able to stop him or hurt him even, so there was no comparison to Pacquiao in punching ability. I simply pointed out that he was getting shopworn by the Forbes fight in all likelihood, even weight issues aside. And, therefore coupled with the beating, a fight with Williams would not see me favoring him.
Like Trinidad, Sturm, Castillejo, and Vargas...the scrawny midgets by comparison. When you're 5'10/5'11ish, and start at Super Featherweight, it's not really your fault you're fighting mostly shorter and smaller guys, is it? Is Pacquiao being a former flyweight that relevant? Can you go "BHOP needed nine rounds to do away with a former Super Featherweight! How's he going to fight Pavlik?" and be taken seriously too?
No he didn't, just Ruelas, Hernandez, Rivera, Coley, Carr, Quartey, Kamaou, Trinidad, Mosley, Campas, Castillejo, Sturm, Hopkins, Vargas, Mayorga, but yeah, no.
I'm trying to figure that out myself. Maybe moving up in weight made him a little less "invincible" but he's a monster.
You right Oscar cannot be favorite in any fight with top level fighters because he ain't top level fighter anymore. But this does not mean he could not be still competitive or score an upset. I doubt Williams is on the same level as Floyd or PAC but he has his own assets, the interesting question is whether he have enough to definitely beat even faded Oscar. He beat Winky, but Winky is definitely different stylistic opponent ... if you break his jab with longer reach and outwork him you can score UD because Winky never was a good offensive fighter on his own. Oscar is much different and it takes to have something exceptional to beat him: either perfect counter-punching like Floyd or exceptional punching power as PAC ... does Williams have something exceptional on his own?
