I think Shane has to throw 75+ punches a round. Shane has to try and make Floyd fight off the back foot and I think Shane needs to try and bully him with big power shots. Shane isn't going to win this fight on the outside--anyone who thinks that is insane. The only chance Shane has is to get in Floyd's chest like Ricky Hatton did but fight a lot more effectively than Hatton did. Basically, Shane has to throw all caution to the wind in this fight to even have a chance. While I think Brother Nazim is an excellent trainer, Shane Mosley is not B-Hop, so, I don't see Nazim having much of an effect. Shane will not win this fight defensively, on the outside, or trying to counter punch. He must be the aggressor and he must throw a lot of punches in every round
The term "power boxing" was created to describe SSM. He isn't a great "boxer" as such. What I mean by this is that his boxing does not derive from his defense: avoiding getting hit and then landing, using the jab/movement to keep the opponent away or off balance in order to land clean punches. He throws great combinations with lethal intent and power. He has great reflexes and is good at avoiding shots through movement and following that with combos. His chin is granite and allows him to take a shot in order to give one back. He loves fighters coming to him, which was why Margarito was tailor made for him. AM has no defense, it wasn't that SSM wasn't getting hit, AM was getting hammered from pillar to post and couldn't throw anything worthwhile. He has trouble with boxers - guys with a very traditional stance and technique - jab, jab, right, left hook type thing. Winky made him look silly because of his height and Winky's great defense. This is why SSM will have fits trying to get to PBF, but hopefully the size and strength factor helps SSM.
Well he was always a brawler, but you're totally wrong about his tools. Prime Mosley (esp. @ 135) had a great jab, great head movement, good infighting skills, could lead, counter etc. - a very well-rounded brawler. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvTmhpP5HE0[/ame]
I love how you can always tell from Mosley's stance and the expresion on his face when he is going to load up with a big shot. You can see it in his eyes when he is going to go for it. His opponents usually can't do nothing about it though.
I agree, they won't make the same tactical errors. Shane led more than he should have in his fight with cotto and I guess assumed that he coud ko him that due to cotto's perceived weak chin. Cotto had respect for shane, he wasn't rushing him as he did judah. Due to mosley's aggression cotto smartly looked to flurry and counter. But even with that the fight was close. Shane landed the harder blows, connecting with 53% of his power punches. He probably should have boxed like he did in the 2nd vargas fight, looking to counter; thus forcing cotto to become the aggressor. Cotto usually gets hurt by being over aggressive. I highly doubt that mosley will be winging away on floyd as he did with cotto. Shane knows that floyd is an excellent counter puncher. I'm pretty sure he'll fight the appropriate fight.
This man speaks the truth. One the best posts I have seen in a while. Great stuff. There is a myth about Shane not being a good boxer. I find it a bunch of B.S. too. He is agressive boxer looking to score knock-outs not win on points. Pop in the Luis Collazo tape, the 2nd Vargas fight, the Margarito Fight, and the 1st De La Hoya and tell me this guy can't box. There no shame in his losses to Forrest and Wright in my opinion. Both guys were a lot bigger then him. And his loss to Cotto was a razor thin fight that could have easily been a draw or a Mosley squeaker win. Does that mean he will beat Floyd? I don't know. He is definitely a legitimate live underdog. But if the odds remain 3 to 1, I think Mosley would be a good bet. I would make Floyd a 2 to 1 favorite.
Floyd by stoppage. I'll break it down closer to the fight when the analysis posts come out. Just incase I get called a nuthugger, and that I know nothing about boxing. Sweet.
Shane isn't a boxer per say but is what I would term a box-fighter. He is too skilled to say he brawls.
"Boxer" should be reserved for a true boxer. I'd say "Power Boxer" fits the young Trinidad at 147. Boxedm with power behind every single punch. That's why I like the phrase I coined for Mosley. "Speedy Slugger". He wins fights by slugging it out, and since he has/had mad speed, or more speed than most of his opponents he usually won. But when faced against a Traditional Boxing style, Mosley was OUTBOXED imo 6 times. Speedy Slugger
Winky is a traditional boxing style......really? ****ing comical. Vernon didn't land his jab at any high rate in either of their fights.....go look up the compubox stats. Both guys landed in the mid 20%'s for punch connect ratio. They were both not very accurate in either fight. GO LOOK IT UP. And Cotto.....got a close win (some think a close loss) due to his landing a clean blow at the end of an exchange when Shane would sometimes relax. His movement was NOT AFFECTIVE......Shane was able too close distance when he wanted to. Shane made the mistake of getting too close and for not throwing the right set of punches. Shane was being too right hand dominant and not mixing it up in that fight. .......DLH II.....uilli get over it already. DLH lost because after 4 rounds he wasn't LANDING HIS JABS! And his movement was merely movement without affective aggression. Shane landed the hard punches down the stretch. And that is why the CROWD, THE RING SIDE PRESS, AND THE JUDGES HAD SHANE WINNING! It was only the HBO crew and DLH fans at home by their IDIOT BOX who thought DLH won. They of course thought DLH won before the fight took place.....they thought he won the first fight and argued about it for weeks after their first fight.
Shane would look like a great boxer to a guy who couldn't match him in hand speed ... his combination punching and energy made him look like a boxer.
Can we say Mosley is like Pacquaio in that they have fast hands and have power, or Pacquaio is more of a swarmer-type and Mosley a slugger?
