He indeed had a shoulder issue throughout the fight, however Castillo was the cause of his broken ribs, in the 7th to be exact.

  5. Yeah, because we all know that means everything inside of the ring, don't we?:patsch

I think sugar ray leonard was smarter than floyd.
I like watching boxers think and read their opponents, and I never saw anyone do it better than leonard.

But currently floyd takes the cake.

  7. Timing comes from practicing which equates to smarts.

I'm not saying PBF isn't smart. He does intelligent things. He does the right things in most situations: knows how to avoid an opponent's shots, knows how to counter them, controls the range, fights to an intelligent game-plan according to his opponent's strengths and weaknesses, etc. In that sense, he's very smart; fine. But Pacquiao does "smart" things as well. He picks his spots, throws the right shots in the right situations, has developed a well-educated left hand, gives angles, feints and subtle movements, can counter and is becoming much more difficult to counter-punch by rolling away after his combinations. Both fighters know how to fight in a way that complements their style, and they both have little tricks that they use to get the job done. The only sense in which Mayweather is "smarter" is that he's more conservative and spends most of his time trying to slow the pace of a fight down. In fact, that's likely to get him beaten against Pacquiao. Hardly "smart".

Taking that into account, and taking into account the injury that Floyd sustained in his first fight with Castillo I don't see how Pernell Whitaker or Sal Sanchez's ring smarts would have guided Floyd to a more decisive win.

Frankly, Castillo's "one-dimension" considering his level of success in his career, was a good enough "one-dimension" that he was competitive with a ATG fighter in Floyd Mayweather based on his physicality.

Just like Chavez and Whitaker. JCC doesnt do many things in the ring. But I'll tell you the one thing he does, he happens to do very well, as far as I'm concerned Sweet Pea wasn't cerebral enough to fight his way to a more decisive win considering how predictable Chavez is suggests that maybe you discounted JLC's physicality and tenacity as a fighter.

No, it's because he PURPOSELY slows the pace by backing off, limiting the action and clinching to avoid exchanges, as well as holding back when he could easily take an over-matched opponent out. I'm not judging him, but he DOES fight cautiously. It's a fact.

Mayweather got a close decision of roughly the same order as that which Castillo should have got in PBF/JLC I. Big woop. And if Mayweather was injured, Castillo was weight-drained.

His balance is decent, but not extraordinary. It doesn't mark him out as more smart than anyone else. There are other fighters (e.g. Hopkins) who can retain literally PERFECT balance and always be in position to counter while being pressured, while in an exchange or while against the ropes. Mayweather can get put off balance and caught if you put him on the ropes, for instance. It's a pretty tenuous basis to argue for Mayweather being especially smart.

I've not said one word against Floyd in this entire thread. I'm not biased against his style or personality. In fact, it's the people who are ASSUMING that such a style or personality makes one "smarter" than another fighter without trying to justify it through analysis of his skills that are presupposing some kind of ideology.

Actually, without adopting a totally biased meaning of the word "smart", I'd say that there's a good case that Pacquiao is a smarter fighter than Mayweather.

Why does ray robinson have 19?
    Why does ali have 5?

Surely they are huge idiots by this logic.

and yes i think Pac has def shown his intelligence as late with his counters, footwork, adapting to certain opponents and so on.... i think hes a bit underrated in that department imo.

But Mayweather is def one of the smartest out there today.... its nice seeing fighters who can outhink their opponents. Hopkins is good at it too (obviously) and its a pleasure to watch IMO
