Sam Langford vs. Max Schmeling

Schmeling handed beating to a welter/middleweight Mickey Walker so I think that he could handle Sam Langford. But from the other hand Langford hits harder than Walker and Schmeling doesn't have granite chin. Interesting matchup but I'll go with Schmeling UD

 

If you asked Jack Blackburn about Maxs chases vs Thammy he'd wet his trousers laughing yer ase down!!

 

I think Schmeling with his methodical approach has a good chance of breaking Langford down and knocking him out. Of course Sam is no pushover and has also the chance to KO Schmeling. Stylewise Schmeling has the right one to weather Langford's storm and counter him with his rights. Pretty even fight. I slightly favour Max but this may very well be due to me hero-worshiping him.

 

Without seeing Langford its hard to judge, he seems to punch a little wide and not so straight and be somewhat of a face first brawler. Schmelling is probably faster with straighter punches, greater countering, hes naturally bigger and rangier. Schmelling was a great puncher but Langford was only really getting stopped past his prime despite fighting the big HWs

In their primes I'm going with Langford in this one. It wouldn't be an easy fight for either of them, in my opinion.

I doubt it. I think they know Schmeling was a great fighter.

Schmeling beat a prime Joe Louis. I'd give him a good chance to beat Langford.

You're talking about ghosts. I'm saying those ghosts (if they existed) would probably know Schmeling was a great fighter. But since I dont believe in ghosts it's certainly not something I feel strongly about, nevermind bet on.

Anyway, I missed your point obviously. Are Blackburn's views particularly relevant ?

Well because he always mentioned Sam as the greatest fighter of them all
his opinion on this match is about as relevant a voice as humanity has to offer!

 

Langford would win.

Schmeling could give him some problems with that overhand right, but Langford was just as sneaky with his punches and had more layers to his game. I see both fighters landing some good counters, while Langfords body attack wears Schmeling down, figures him out, and sets him up for the finish.

 

I have never seen Sam Langford fight, but his reputation is enough to be favored over Ali, Holmes, Tyson, Louis, Lewis, Frazier, Marciano and Dempsey... No film needed here.. He was a 5'7", 180 lb monster who fought like a rampaging beast, leaving no living thing standing in his wake.. He out generaled generals. Drank rivers and ate mountains.. He had 34 career losses and some 40 draws, but all of them can be well justified, because he was fighting sometimes as many as 8 or 9 elite fighters per week..Its futile to compare anyone to Langford.
