Especially if its for a world title. If i was warren i would get Appleby in with Skyes and then Kyrakosion. Then Burns at the end of the year in a massive scottish fight.
Lets hope that with a year out Appleby has been able to significantly improve, if not then he is going nowhere fast
rob i never read your other post sorry, either way there's not a SFW in the UK just now as good as burns.good luck to paul appleby though
But Burns won't be around domestically though if he is going for a world title, so I think Appleby can clean up domestically. Sykes or Morris would be a test though.
Appleby has major flaws, mainly an inability to adapt when things go pear shaped and he is not in a position to dictate (this will probably improve with age and experience)...I honestly think that either Sykes or Morris could apply enough pressure to seriously upset Paul. The old version of John Simpson could and should have beaten him, and I have no doubt that at either FW or SFW John would do a proper number on him now.
To be honest after beating Yakubu Amidu and a prime Micheal Gomez plus an in form Kevin O'Hara in the fashion he did I can not see any boxers in Europe being capable of getting near Burns. Those wins against world class opponents and the final eliminator for the world title against O'Hara prove the greatness of Ricky. Appleby has faced no one in the class of these three or Osumanu Akaba and Gheorghe Ghiompirica so should not be talked about in the same sentance as the Burns who has done it all the hard way by winning the Commonwealth belt away from home and then the British and European belts (well he would have won if he had fought for them).
Yeah I would give Paul a couple of warm-up fights before throwing him in with the top guys in the division domestically at the moment. A defeat this year for him could potentially harm his future in the sport (in regards to his confidence). Personally, I felt he was pushed too hard and his progress just needs to be slowed down. He is only 22 so has plenty of time on his side. A British/Commonwealth title challenge in 12-18 months would be suitable IMO.
