Everyone has a reason why their favorite fighter is their favorite fighter...maybe the guy is from the same hometown as you, maybe you just like his style, or maybe...you just hopped on the bandwagon...

...mine is Manny Pacquiao. I was dating this Filipino girl a few years ago, and I we had traveled to Los Angeles to visit her family. At the time, I had only a vague idea of who Pacquiao was, but I ended up watching him fight Lucero with her family, and I wasn't really impressed, but he had caught my attention. A few months later my eyes were really opened when he knocked out Barrera, and even more so when he knocked JMM down 3 times in the first round...so long story short, Pacquiao officially became my favorite fighter in the first round of the JMM fight...before that it was Roy Jones Jr, and had been since the mid 90s.

My favorite = Mike Tyson. I saw him knock a guy out once. That's all you need to see to become a fan.

Marco Antonio Barrera- I watched Barrera/Morales I. What other reason do I need?

Paul Williams- I generally cheer for the underdog, so I was backing Williams when he fought Margarito (this was before I knew much about him). I was just incredibly impressed by his chin, stamina, and workrate. The man loves to fight, and he just absolutely brings it in every single round. Even though his skills might be a little sloppy I'll always support an exciting action fighter like that.

They're also both good body punchers, which is something I really appreciate.

My favorite fighter is Mayweather! The first time I saw him fight, Manfreddy 1999, I was impressed but still skeptical. After seeing his destruction of Corrales and then Jesus Chavez, I was fully converted.

Thomas Hearns? How did he become my favorite? When he fought Ray Leonard in 1981 I was rooting for Ray Leonard. And Ray won after a tough fight. Tommy always came back and won and never played games, just won in style. I then saw Ray retire and play games with coming back with Kevin Howard and then retiring and then coming back with Marvin. He played game after game for his ego. He is a great fighter I do not condemn that, but his mind games and all that showed him to be not that great a guy, but Tommy was a great guy and put his all into boxing honestly like Hagler did also. Hearns fought less then 3 months after lossing to Ray and winning another title against Benitez, and then beating Duran and always having humility in losses and wins. I just liked his attitude of coming back and not playing games. One other thing, I remember in early 1982, Hearns fought Marcos Geraldo. During the broadcast Ray said I will fight Tommy as soon as he says there was no chance for him to continue. I was a big Ray fan up until that point. After that I was a fan because he was so great, but not the same way I was before.

Roy has been my favorite fighter since the Olympic finals vs. Park Si Hun. Before that it was Mike Tyson, I don't remember the exact fight... I want to say it was the destruction of Trevor Berbick, and a few other fights.

Nigel Benn, rememer seeing him on saturday afternoon tv as he was coming through the ranks. I was about 12 and just starting to seriously like boxing and he was just a beast. A flawed fighter cos he got hit a bit too much but that flaw was what made him special, if he got hurt, which he did often he would just react like a wild animal and come right back at you. Proper hard puncher, defined the warrior spirit i respect in boxers.

morales. His fighting style is pretty much self explanatory as to why anyone would like him. First seen him at 122 around late 1999.

I was really amazed by this little skinny guy who could punch so hard and had such a good chin. I watched a few fights here and there before but morales got me hooked.

leonard - just watching the style, the guts, the charisma, the heart, the quality - what a phenominal boxer, the best i've ever seen by a distance.

hagler - 2 of the 1st fights i watched in boxing (8 or 9 year old) where hagler against hearns and hagler against mugabi. how the **** could you not love hagler and the sport of boxing after that. to this day i am still mesmarised by the 1st round of hagler - hearns. even though i know every move before i watch a repeat of that 1st round it still gets me pumped and mad for this sport.

hearns - what a ****in warrior. tommy put it all on the line every single fight. he got in that ring and it was either knock himout or be knocked out, he didn't know the meaning of fear, he just wanted to have a tear up against anyone. probably the most exciting boxer to watch of all time.

Joe Calzaghe became my favourite boxer because when my friend got me into boxing a few years ago, most of the talk was based around Calzaghe because of the way he beat Lacy. My friend is a purist when it comes to boxing. He has no particular favourite (although he has a big poster of Corales on his locker in work) and everytime he'd talk about a fight, he would talk about the story behind it or the tactics involved. Now I always considered Calzaghe as a weak puncher and a lucky champion because I was more a fan of Robin Reid from Merseyside, but the more my mate pointed out about Calzaghe, like his movement around Lacy and his combo's, the more I started to appreciate how good and how technical he actually was. From then on, everytime theres a big fight coming up, i'd consult my mate and we'd talk tactics and just basic jibber jabber about boxing. I think I can hold my own a bit now too.

Joe Calzaghe had that Champion mentallity in the ring AND he was a clever boxer... plus, all but one of his fights we're exciting to watch! What more can a boxing fan ask for? :good

I hear that...but I was never a big fan of guys who block punches with their head, but if I were, Gatti would definitely be my favorite.

He also had that stone cold killer look in his eyes right before the fight.... One of the most intimidating stare downs of all time. That is one of my favorite things about Hearns.:yep

Vargas - I just related to him, idk.... his attitude and persona, and i related a bit to his childhood and such and then when hes inside the ring, his focused anger and yet fairly honed skills (in his prime) won me over as well, and ALWAYS going for the best.... always. But his heart.... his heart and will is what made him, and will keep him forever, as my favorite fighter of all time. And then when i did a drawing of him in art class when i was in school, and sent it to his website, and he put it UP on his site? lol... i mean, when you have a hero growing up and you get your artwork put on his site lol, it means a lot to ya. We talked for years after that cuz he actually sent me a reply message, and things just went from there. There can never be a fighter i like more then Vargas because he 'my fighter' growing up, and with his messages and everything that goes in to being a teen and looking up to that sports hero so to speak, it just wont be the same. The Ferocious One..... my all time favorite fighter.

Cotto - i actually didnt much care for cotto at first.... but fight after fight i would watch him and he started growing on me, and then i remember for the Pinto fight i had to interrupt what my friends were doing to watch it at their house lol, and he just destroyed pinto, looked like a machine. then i got a video of his fight with bazan, it was a vhs and the tv next to my bed is one of those small small small tvs with a built in vhs player, so i would always watch this tape as id fall asleep (it had like 10 other fights on there as well) and then slowly i just started liking him, his style was awsome to me, and i loved how he came off as this silent pit bull... then when he was in trouble against torres i realised how bad i wanted him to win lol, and how he had his adversity against torres and pulled through there was no question he was a favorite fighter of mine afterwards. Then over the years, with Morales and Vargas retiring, he had become my favorite active fighter.

Those are my favorite all time fighter and my active favorite.... im leaving out many many others like mayorga, miranda, wlad, morales, micky, ect.
