When going up in weight, it seems many fighters don't lift weights...

    My line of thought on this one is that when moving up a weight class or two it seems most fighters don't really lift and put on muscle which I would see as being more beneficial than coming in a little soft.

    Examples: Winky vs Hopkins, Pavlik vs Hopkins, Juan Diaz vs Malignaggi

    Let me continue and say that I am NOT talking about fighters coming in bulky like a prime Arnold but simple getting some lean muscle to add the weight. Someone like Hearns had a very muscular body so when he moved up in weight his body was able to support the gain (not his chin though), the man went from welter to Cruiser. Roy Jones, especially for the Ruiz fight put on muscle, he too always had a muscular frame as well.

    For this reason I think a guy like Paul Williams may suffer from moving past middleweight, while he has a fighters build, lean and strong looking, he is not muscular and adding more soft tissue isn't gonna help. Williams and Pavlik would benefit greatly from increased WEIGHT training, not just strength and conditioning.

    You mean Roid Jones? Thats how he easily packed on the muscle.

    doing too many weights stiffens up the joints and can slow a fighter way down

    yeah weights are a fast punchers worst enemy .

    hopkins looked really good against tarver. I thought for sure he was going to loose but then i saw the weigh in pictures and how hopkins looked solid and like a natural 175 guy and i was thinking wow he really has a decent chance. still was surprised by the fight though.


    I agree that winky should have came in better shape for the hopkins fight. I was really disappointed about that. I think he could have won on activity but he needed to be in top shape and with great stamina and he didnt do that.

    when hopkins went from MW to LHW didnt mackie shilstone have him on a rigorous weight training routine?

    i think the key is to lift smart i guess cus weights do slow fighters down but can be beneficial if done the right way.

    Weights slow you down. You don't want bulky mass. You want lean toned muscles. More reps, less weights.

    As you can see i understand, what bulky muscle can do. I box and I weight lift. My point is that fighters whose frames are less muscular seem to struggle as they go up in weight. Hopkins is a prime example of someone whose body was fit to go up in weight because he was a well framed guy. Its the Pavlik's, Williams, Diaz's and now come to think of it Cotto at 154 that need to be leary..

    For boxing, you'd want higher weights/lower reps - and more fundamental/basic lifts rather than isolation ones.

    Muscles have nothing to do with boxing, fast twitch fibers in your muscles and muscle memory is what helps fighters. In boxing tournaments ive seen the skinniest kid whoop a big as dude. Marvin Hagler for ex. never lifted a weight in his life.

    they put muscle mass on there back and legs were the muscles they need developes.
    Hit the bag and see which muscles are sore, those are the muscles they feeding, the sore muscles on the speed bag thats what gets fed the same ones that are sore from running and jumping weight. Nothing Beneficial from bench pressing. Haseem Rahman is the Strongest Heavy Weight around but hes slow his jab is weak and his right is useless because any Heavyweight thats in shape and focused sees it a mile away. your punch comes from your back and legs upercuts come from biceps. Your shoulders is what connects the energy to your fist

    Speed and power in an uppercut are generated from the rotation of the hips and the legs, not the biceps.

    So what is better for boxer's? Lower weights/more reps or higher weights/less reps?
