What is the proper way to through a jab??

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by dudemcdudeson, Mar 10, 2010.

  1. I want to be a boxer but I heard the jab is the most effective weapon a fighter has. I want to start from the begining and learn the basics. The book I have, "Boxing 101 by Billy Zumbrun" is just too advanced for me. Any tips???

First thing is to know how to spell "throw". Everything else will follow.

It's quite an obvious skill to get decent at. Just pop out your left (or right if you are southpaw). Practice on a heavybag and throw to about eye level, imagine it's someone's head. Also make sure your left foot is the front foot and pointing forward, with your right foot pointing out at almost a 90 degree angle. Practice double and triple jabs, then a right cross.

That is Eastside Boxing for you!
Your jab should be like a stick. Imagine your arm as a stick. When you point the stick, it should come out straight, no bend and come right back to your cheek (Some say chin).
Watch any video of Larry Holmes. He had a tree trunk attached to his shoulder.

Make sure elbow isnt coming out to the side when you throw the jab like Jermain Taylor does often for example.

Snap it out without flaring your elbow out, rotate your arm so that your fist is at least horizontal at the end of the punch - this helps bring your shoulder up to cover your chin for a possible counter. Speed and accuracy are what you're looking for with the jab.

all above are good advices. I will add to it that you should step when you jab. It put weight on your punch. practice snapping out your jab so you don't develop bad habits of lazy jab. shoot it high so ur opponent can't counter it.

Come on man. Don't discourage him. He might end up being pretty good. It's attitudes like this that are hurting the sport. It's always safer to be a fan than participant, but if everyone follows this logic, there won't be a sport to be a fan of.

Good advice above. Make sure you don't snap your elbow out when you throw it; you can injure your elbow if you do. And keep your wrist locked because if you don't you'll injure your wrist or hand on impact.
