Yeah RAI is free to air as far as I know. You can pick it up in a lot of countries around the mediterranean. Hopefully we'll be able to get a look at the fight
I heard a good few went over to italy with Paulie- this could be a bit of a break for the Hylands...three irish champion brothers has to be marketable if not here in the States at least.. lets hope someone gets behind them and gets them the big fights
Peters was bigging up Pajo after his last show and was talking about a Kiko clash! that would be a good fight and a recognised name for Pajo's record.
bad idea imo. one could be held back due to losses for the other 2. i think its fair to say that one stands out and all this talk about promoters is moot imo. people will pay to see a good fighter whoop another good fighter. theres no magic formula, no promotional trick that produces longevity ( dunne being relied on too much by Peters? a lot of casuals led to believe hes better than he really is means when he loses people will walk away). if pajo is good enough then he will reap the rewards. its not right to look for gimmicks to run a career off as much as a good guy hatton is and raising the general public consciouness in the uk about the sport, he ultimately was bad in the long run for the game cormac is correct. there are only 6 million people in the island and unless there is proper promotional sharing of dates and assets then everyone is swimming agasint the tide i believe though in ireland there is a derth of professional sport for tv and paying viewers. look at the way the rugby has taken off. there is no great interest in semi-pro soccer basketball athletics ice hockey etc so there is a clear gap in the market for pro boxing imo. people need to be informed of fighters, allowed to see them. the links between the am and pro game needs strengthened. there is a cultural affinity for fighting both historically and presently all over the county:bbb ffs, i get the impression sometimes if 5/6 fellas off this board banged the heads together, co-ordinating media promotion and spreading the word we could put together a series of pro-am shows that would be sell outs!
I agree with you to some extent pathmanc. The people on here have the knowledge, passion and drive to get involved in stuff and push things. However, we all need to get paid and work to do so this means peoples spare time is limited. And the big scary issue of financing looms large for any kind of shows (pro/ams are banned by the BUI by the way). While we might all be good with ideas for promotion any kind of marketing of these events requires capital investment. Also, obviously, the venue, fighters, programmes, ring announcers, etc.. etc... all have to be paid for. Its a big risk to take and whether we like it or not requires some serious captial clout. Also, theres the issues of other promoters not letting you get involved in their business. What kind of card would you be able to put together if certain boxers were told 'if you do this freelance card you can forget about boxing on my cards again'. The risk is too high for all involved unfortunately. Unless unbeknown to us all one of our ESB'ers is a sugar daddy will to finance this. Its just not practical. If Peters can't sell out a 4 Irish title fight bill at the stadium, and Egan has to postpone his card, then enthusiastic amateurs are not going to be able to put anything of note together Also the 'gap in the market' doesn't reallt exist. People have to like boxing to some degree in the first place otherwise you end up trading on personalities alone rather than the sport.
I was saying the same thing (privately) the other day to someone else. There are a lot of good Irish fighters out there and good domestic fights to be made with not enough promotional options. The biggest issue is getting good sponsors imo. The rest is very doable.
Some of the smaller promoters should go on the dragons den. I can imagine the response if take in Egan has a tv deal for X amouth of fights with Setanta. Goes on looking for investment of such and such or sponsership of some sort. Market it well and give it a lash see if they are willing to sponsor or get involved with the promotional side of things.
A successful show. Singular. A one off. A novelty. All Polish fighters, a large Polish community in Dublin. No rival promoters running all Polish shows to deal with. A 'Polish night out' where they can all mix a long way from home. We've no idea what (if anything) the fighters got paid. The only fight listed had two lads with only a couple of fights under their belt. It's a long way from comparable to the problem Irish promoters and boxers face EDIT Also, I've no idea how popular boxing is in general in Poland. Maybe they have scope for regular quarterly shows even because the Polish are fight fans? Whether we like it or not, Joe Public here doesn't give a monkeys about boxing.
I've been hearing about these boxing shows which have been tied in with local GAA clubs - sort of like white collar boxing I think. Supposedly they are knock out 100's of tickets within a matter of hours. Anyone know anything about this?
