    This is the stoppage.

    [yt]7x5g25HFKtY[/yt]

This is Lewis badly hurt against Briggs (skip to 8:40), falling backwards into the ropes and then reeling around the ring. He covers up and takes a few good solid punches for the last 30 seconds of the round, but seems well on the way to recovering when the round ends.

I believe that Lewis should have been given the opportunity to continue. He was badly hurt, but in his first professional knockdown, and a bad one, he was in control enough to move towards the ref with his gloves tucked under his chin while looking him in the eyes.

Maybe he could have survived McCall like he did Briggs.

If he managed to weather the storm, goes on to UD McCall, and avoids that defeat, what would have happened to Lewis' career?

Its hard to say, lennoxs legs wee wobbling, but that doesnt mean he couldnt have hung on and cleared his head, McCall isnt the best finnisher after all. If Lennox survives the round he wins and if he really lays into McCall he might even put him away

Answer to thread title - Lewis makes history by becoming the first HW to get KTFO twice in one fight.

    Legit stoppage, end of.

Lewis was gone against McCall. A mere tap would have knocked him down and out, I think.

The truth is, the referee did seem to be giving him a chance to stand up straight, and he didn't wave it off right away, but Lewis was just doing a progressively worse jelly-legged danced. He was just on shaky legs, he was on jelly legs. Looked like he fell on to the referee and had to be held up a bit too at one point.

It was worse that the scare he had against Briggs. A lot worse.

He survives and McCall was going to burn out from that high tension he came into the ring with. Lennox could tie him up and hold him & Oliver loops that arcing right from way on the outside anyway. Or just hold his gloves up tight and high and it's not as if there are uppercuts or lefthooks to worry about. Just the telegraphed right hand. McCall would've thrown some more haymakers and not landed clean and exhausted his gas tank and have to take a breather after 20 seconds of a sustained attack. Like mentioned earlier, McCall is no world class finisher and couldn't even get a tired Bruno out of there. The Lewis legs were coming back and he can circle or just cover up on the ropes to kill time and would not be looking to exchange.

I think the stoppage was questionable, can see both sides of the argument really.

That said, if he'd been allowed to continue.... he might have kept his cheerleader - sorry, trainer - Pepe Correa, who was doing nothing with him.

It sounds stupid that a KO loss to a lesser opponent is a good thing, but it probably applies in this case.

Also, what's ironic though is that the commentator says 'his career must be in tatters now', and of course Lennox went on to enjoy a fine career. It might have even been better, but let's not speculate.

Lewis was hurt badly, but Mcall was a horrible finisher. Its conceiveable that Lewis could have survived and gone on to win.

I was actually thinking that if Lennox was allowed to continue, McCall might have snapped out of his trance, had Lennox worn down from punching him, and landed another big KO punch against an unsuspecting Lewis. He did say that these were his tactics, afterall.

But it seems that i have the wrong fight, from all the previous comments.

you wish. lewis couldnt even ko mccall in the rematch when mccal wasnt even defending himself. the best lewis could was to surivive long enough to recover and win a decision, considering how limited mccall is.

and he would do that same if he had been able to recover after the kd in the first fight, thus resulting in a decsion victory.

I thought the stoppage was fine. It was a judgement call and that's what ref's are paid to do, protect fighters from serious harm. Hard to say what would have happened had it continued. But, whether or not you're likely to get hit isn't really the point, the point is you always have to be in a position where you at least have the ability to defend yourself. Lewis probably didn't have that ability at that time. From what I recall, in interviews, Lewis himself didn't have a problem with the stoppage.

Then we would have been deprived of McCall's epic high jump celebration.

On a serious note, I think Lennox would have won a decision, McCall is a terrible finisher, just two fights later he couldn't KO Frank Bruno when he was gassed late and started pulling a Ruiz
