I think the weight hurt Griffith. I think it made him a bit weaker, the kd and subsequent struggle to get up (didn't appear hurt just lacklustre) shows this IMO. Griffith tried very hard but I had Napoles about five or six points ahead by the end I think.
Yes, I had Napoles well up, but Griffith made him work. I'd always imagined it was a rout. Wonder how it would of went if it was made at middleweight.
i saw the griffith napoles fight last week or the week before and i must admit i had napoles way way ahead and out of sight i thought it was very competative but napoles was just edging the rounds
I have seen it before, just not in a while. It was interesting asd Griffith pressed and Napoles looked to counter and box. Griffith at times closed the ring off well and got inside where he did his best work by coming in with a wide left hook then working the body. But I was very surprised at Napoles's speed and accuracy on the inside as he let his hands go in combinations to get the best of the inside work. After Napoles realised he could beat Griffith on the inside it became one-sided IMO. Griffith's aggresion kept it competitive but Napoles was a true ring general and bossed the fight after the 5th round say. I gave Griffith round 1,5 and 9. I think Napoles was just to much for Griffith as he did out ring general him and landed some real shar shots. There is a sequence at the edn of round 4 which is amazing by Napoles. Mr Griffith says he ****ed up on the weight, and came down too quick. I had it 12-3 to Napoles.
Watched Gushikan vs Martin Vargas (Gushiken has to work but his deadly southpaw one-two is on show here, like how he nixes up his lead hand often, he doesn't feint, just throws snappy shots without rhythm that catch his opponent off guard and allow him to bombard his opponent) and against Juan Guzman. Guzman throws awkward shots that twist in right at the end of the punch. Whilst Gushiken scores quite a few kd's (some lovely uppercuts here) he shows his true class when he is severely wobbled by right to the temple and then a shocking left hook to the side of the head. Gushiken uses good upper body movement against the ropes (usually prefers to move out of range and counter) and with a nice combination has Guzman on the run again. Yesterday I watched the great Masao Ohba against the tough and hard hitting Thai hardcase Chionoi. I didn't bother scoring it, I was too busy watching the screen with an amaEd expression on my face. Ohba badly hurt and dropped (twice I think) in the first round. Clearly hurts his ankle but gets himself together. I always felt Ohba would be a pure boxer (had only seen hl's before) and I had seen someone predict Ricardo Lopez would stop him late, and it was the view of a poster who's opinion I respect. But Ohba, who has a truly beautiful jab, was a big Flyweight. He can box and move through really he uses his jab to keep his opponent smart before hitting them with a barrage of punches. Considering the punches Chionoi lands throughout the fight I'd say Ohba had at least a bloody good chin. The ending is horrific, Chionoi gets smashed up in the 12th I think, dropped twice and stopped. Ohba is not the biggest hitter but punches with authority. A Japanese Salvador Sanchez, died in a car smash aged 23, title defences under his belt and some quality wins. He was looking to move up to Bantam, probably would've ended up fighting say, Rodolfo Martinez. Woulda been a quality fight.
Best chin: Chuvalo :deal I think Marg shows an even better chin against Mosley. I don't think Margarito was in great shape for the fight and Mosley hits much harder than Cotto. Marg took more shots and had hardly any success himself. Not one if the ATG welterweight chins IMO, though certainly very, very durable.
That was the "writing is on the wall" fight for Bruno before Bonecrusher dotted the "i"s and crossed the "t"'s. BTW Cummings also holds a draw with a comebacking Joe Frazier, he won the fight pretty clearly but Joe got a draw out of sentiment.
