Eddie Cool was the only man I ever heard that tabbed Escalera the winner over Tyrone Everett.

I think he was still writing for Ring until Bert Sugar took over in 1979 and gave the magazine a much-needed revamp. One of the first things he did was do-away with their god-awful all-time ratings and said something like "a magazine that has Jim Jeffries rated ahead of Muhammad Ali will not be taken seriously". He was right.

I loved how Flash always brought up the Favela stiffs as the greatest running joke in the boxing world

Somebody with all of Flash's newsletter issues should post them on line, to show today's glibly ignorant and idiotic sports Twinkies and airheads what real "take no prisoners" writing looks like. (And I wanna see :pissboxWRECK provide updated records for Hispanic legend "Jose Canusee" and Korean icon "Pe Suh ****!")

Used to see him nattering at every Felt Forum fight, lookin' like Ratso Rizzo, with a long, filthy raincoat, surrounded by nerdy acolytes, clutching papers that kept slipping outta their hands.

Flash was the most anticipated read in boxing during his heyday.

    Amen.

He sure didn't pull for the house and/or popular fighters 100% of the time. He was a true independent & since that time writers definately know who's buttering their bread.

Do you remember how bad the regular ratings were under Ort? Absolutely awful. I don't know if I'm repeating myself here (it's an old thread), but in 1976-77 Ring Magazine didn't even include Earnie Shavers and Joe Bugner in their top 10. That's amazing considering that both were legitimate, established contenders. At the same time, Ring Magazine had Johnny Boudreux ranked in the top five or six. It also included Stan Ward and Leroy Jones, before either had even proven themselves.

In the spring of 1977, Shavers kayoed Howard Smith (rated by Ring) in two rounds on national televison. I remember the TV announcer pointing out that Shavers was unrated by Ring Magazine. Jerry Quarry, the co-host, then said bluntly, "I don't understand Ring Magazine's ratings philosophy. Earnie Shavers in definitely a top 10 contender. Maybe not top 5, but definitely top 10."

Very, very strange ratings system under Ort.
