If Marciano was a crude boxer, how come he outpointed Ezzard Charles over 15?

Normally if a slowish, crude heavyweight beats a slick blown-up light heavyweight, it's by KO. Yet Marciano clearly outpointed the slick, highly skilled Ezzard Charles over 15 rounds. Are Marciano's boxing skills being underrated? Or was it just a matter of eventually wearing down the smaller man by volume of punches - literally beating him rather than out-boxing him?

For one thing, Charles was not the same Charles who so cleanly outpointed Joe Louis. For another, Charles was always a light heavyweight campaigning in a war-weakened heavyweight division. He could be overpowered by a strong heavyweight.

Workrate and pressure works against slick boxers.

If Marvin Hart did beat Jack Johnson then this is how he did it.

Uh, some of the biggest and strongest contenders of the era were stopped by Charles. All over six foot, all big punchers, all in their prime, and all hovering around or over 200 pounds. Your theory holds no weight.

I know it was showbiz to be taken with more than a few grains of salt, but this reminds me that Ali said he was surprised to learn how hard it was to land solid punches against Marciano in their choreographed computer fight.

Ali did not land solid punches though did he, or even try to, their punches were pulled. Marciano was hurt once ,when Ali dislodged his toupee.:D

The first fight between Marciano vs Charles was a war! Marciano's superior work rate and power wore Charles down. Charles was not always a smart fighter. He often went toe to toe with Marciano when he should have moved and boxed more.

    There's different types of crude.

    Rocky was crude but effective.

Because Rocky was in his physical prime, exceptionally well conditioned, had a cast iron chin, terrific two handed power and work rate ...when this terrific set of "other " skills are applied against a former great light heavyweight, clearly on the downside of his career , whose legs and movement had clearly seen better days, there you go ...
