was hopkins closer to his prime then calzaghe in their fight? i think so...

i am quite tired of everyone saying how old hopkins was in their fight and how calazghe was the younger man.....


the issue is that calzaghe had ruined hands against both hopkins/jones and this is what forced him to slap to so much, in his prime he use to ko a lot of guys

yeah he was younger then these guys but he had busted hands
which i think is a huge deal,


also well jones was a done deal when he fought calzaghe, hopkins is another story


is it me or is it hard to tell when hopkins prime actually is/was???

before calzaghe he beat winky wright and traver...big wins and traver fight was not a hard one for him

and after calazghe he easily beat kelly pavik....

now in hopkin's so called prime he struggled with guys like robert allen and echols, and did almost no damage to a guy like keith holmes


now your telling me the guy who tooled traver and wright was not as good as the guy who struggled with holmes,allen etc????

 

If these things were that generic we could all just go home on this stuff.

See the careers of Evander Holyfield, Roberto Duran, Shane Mosley, and many other for reference. Fighters are human. They have good days and bad. They burn hot and cold, particularly at the END of their careers. Hopkins didn't look good in that fight, Calzaghe still somehow looked worse.

 

Define "good".
Styles make fights. Hopkins did not have the output as he did when younger. Also the reason he lost to Taylor. Just too much inactivity. Some opponents can not capitalize on this inactivity. Calzaghe could.

Did Hopkins struggle against Holmes or Allen? The Holmes fight was pathetic...he definitley did NOT struggle against Holmes. Holmes wanted to last the distance and Hopkin's safety first style allowed him to. But Hopkins was in NO danger of losing at any time that I remember.
Haven't seen the second Allan fight.

I agree. Everyone ages different & Hopkins has got alot better with age, I mean do you think the Hopkins that Calzaghe beat would have only drawn with Mercado? I dont. This thread will get alot of critics on it because for some reason Hopkins fans seem to have a hard time accepting Calzaghe beat him.
The picture that has been shown on an earlier post above also show how Hopkins used the head before landing a good shot, not really the best advert.
Everyone says about how Hopkins neutralized Calzaghe but think of this - Hopkins showed a good workrate in his fight before against Wright and in his fight after against Pavlik and Hopkins is known to come on strong late, yet against Calzaghe he threw much much less and was holding endlessly, looking for time out and faking low blows, not something someone who thinks they are winning does. Where was Hopkins strong finish? So maybe it could be that Calzaghe neutralized Hopkins whilst landing more on Hopkins than anyone ever and throwing over 700 shots and finishing the stronger

 

it makes them feel better to say he was past his best (when he evidently was'nt) because he got ***** slapped by a sheep shagger who has'nt had a punch for five years in front of his own people with naz and roach in his corner! calzaghe even butt****ed him for good measure lol since when wad hopkins known for his high output? lmfao! tools.

I'm a big Hop fan but I thought he lost that fight. He got the knockdown and it hurt him because he thought he could cruise to a decision win.

... Good point, TS. I think Hopkins was pretty close to his best while Calzaghe was far from his. Although he fought smart, he didn't have the power he used to have before developing those hand issues.

they will also tell u its all about stamina! yet in his 5 fights prior to calzaghe he went 12 rounds in each of them and in the 2 following jc he again went the distance without hardly breaking a sweat! look at the vanderpool fight! a competitive 12 rounder with someone lacy spanked in 7! was that his prime?

 

Hopkins is old, but obviously doing the PEDs, if Mayweather nuthugging logic is anything to go by.
