Rocky made this remark whilst doing a commentary for the highlights package I have for the epic Moore TKO14 Johnson (if i'm going to watch Pacquiao-Clotty tonight, I need to warm up with something a little more technically proficent :yep). It made me think about who were

    a) the very best guys at countering the right hand

    b) the very best guy at scoring with the right hand lead

    Thoughts gentlemen?

Actually, Rocky makes many fine technical observations.

Before we do this, you might be interested in this one. A good few years ago i bought The Ring and there was an article about Gorilla Jones, the former middleweight who held a version of the title. On him getting dropped by a right hand he said something to the effect of 'there's no excuse for getting hit with a right hand'. That's dam high standards to have as a fighter.

Anyway i'm going to watch it now. Enjoy.

Barney Ross and Bernard Hopkins scored with the right lead. Joe Frazier would punish anyone with a low right, as would Robinson. Dick Tiger was great at bobbing up and down andcoming over his man's right hand.

At countering with the right hand, Victor Galindez. I'm out.

For a) Hopkins would be my call. Can throw a straight right lead, looping right lead, semi-hook/semi-straight right lead, right lead to the chest anticipating his man will duck into it - the list goes on. All executed with deadly precision and considerable power, from virtually any position.

Duran might be a dark horse.

Rocky wasn't just the primate savage who lacked boxing suffice like most percieve him to be. His commentary can be particularly insightful.

I'm interesting in this pack you speak of. It would be hugely epic if you could upload this Moore fight with Rocco's commentating.

Wasn't it a right uppercut that had Rocky down? By Moore of all people...

Rocco would always go in that crouch and bring his left glove up. He would generally use a variation of a shoulder block, getting low, and or parrying the right hand if an opponent was punching him with it.

Rocky's enthusiasm for Moore in his commentating is hilarious.

A lot of it is unintentionally funny for me. He's got that New England accent and he just accentuates certain words so much.

    "Straighten up Archie!"

Especially in his commentating of Basilio vs DeMarco.

Aye, he is totally one sided. He's also banging on about how weight drained Moore was. But I can see how he got the gig.

This doesn't answer either of your questions Mac ,but I watched Holmes versus Leroy Jones yesterday,Jones nailed Lary with the right hand countless times.Lucky for Larry ,there was not much steam on it.

Didnt Marciano twice get put down with rights?

    a - countering rights - Tyson/Chavez/Toney
    b - scoring lead rights - Mayweather/Duran/Toney

Just going off the top of my head and visualising some snippets from my memory bank, would Joey Giardello be a good choice here?

For countering a right hand lead, look no further than Jose Napoles. The first fighter I ever seen land a lead right on Napoles was Hedgemon Lewis and Napoles wasnt at his best and destroyed him in the rematch.

When a fighter threw a lead right at Napoles, it opened up his chest area. Napoles slipped underneath the punch and chucked in a booming right uppercut/hook under the heart. Brutal.

Yeah, that's the punch. Remember how SuzieQ used to go ON and ON and ON about Larry's vulnerability to right hands? I miss that guy.

Sure. Marciano was full of praise for both these guys and was being playful, saying how technically asured and savy they both were. He was basically making the point that both were so good defensively that they could only tag each other with left hands.

    Good post.

It is a shot he uses brilliantly in the second Lewis fight.

It works really well against southpaws but too pull it off, it has to be done really quick and effortless.

Left hook by Walcott, sneaky right uppercut by Moore but these men were pin point punchers
