Who is the greatest Southpaw of all-time? Pacquiao, Whitaker or Hagler?

Who was greater skillwise? Whitaker
Accomplishments? Pacquiao

 

Who could go wrong with any of these champs?

Whitaker is still the king of southpaws but Pacquiao will move ahead of him with a win over Mosley or Mayweather. I hate to put Hagler last but I think he is just a shade behind both fighters.

I think I'm gonna watch Whitaker vs. Nelson. No southpaw in history was ever as good as Whitaker was that night.

 

Not very good comparisons at all. Holmes and Holyfield are both ATG's and as much as I like Pac, he hasn't beaten an ATG at welter, much less an ATG in their prime at welter. I have Pac on par with Whitaker, but Hagler is still the best southpaw fighter of all time IMO. He is beating very good, bigger men, but Cotto, Oscar, and Hatton are not even close to the level Holyfield, especially at cruiser where he has never been defeated, and a prime Holmes were. Both are ATG's, something Cotto, Oscar, and Hatton never unfortunately will not be.

 

You don't think DLH was an ATG? While I don't think he was in ATG form for the Pacquiao fight. The one that fought Whitaker, Quartey, Carr, and Chavez certainly looked the part to me.

 

The fact that Pac is winning this poll...tells you everything you need to know about ESB!!!

 

Its getting the point where its debatable now though...I still cant see the argument for Pac being over Sweet Pea but its getting close enough now that there probably is one.

Manny taking out the Mosley-Money winner settles it beyond a doubt IMO.

Now I saw it all. Just because he won a shut out against a B level opponent, Pacquiao is a better southpaw than Whitaker was...

 

He is a hall of famer, he was very good, but an ATG has to be one that has wins over other ATG's that were in their prime. Whitaker and Chavez were both past their primes. While Quartey and Carr were very good and in their primes, they are not considered great. I do think tho, Oscar got robbed in the Trinidad fight and he also beat Mosley in the rematch, but it was a close fight. Aside the Hopkins fight, those 2 were his most important fights and didn't get the W even tho he should have. A 3rd fight with Mosley would of told us who really was the better fighter, but that's not how boxing works and Mosley would of had already won 2 out of 3 anyways.

For one, it simply goes back and back. You say well who did fighter A beat that was a prime ATG? Fighter B. Who did fighter B beat? Fighter C. Who did fighter C beat? And so forth.

Furthermore, look at Chavez. His best wins were probably Edwin Rosario and Meldrick Taylor. Taylor's best wins were Buddy McGirt and Aaron Davis. Not exactly ATG status. Likewise for Rosario. But of course Chavez is indeed an ATG, despite not having any wins over other ATGs.

 

Yes, I see what you mean, Chavez is indeed an ATG to many, but I never mentioned that he was or wasn't. I'm not a sheep and I actually rate Salvador Sanchez higher than Chavez because in his short time at the top he did beat 2 ATG's in Gomez and Nelson. Being Mexican I'm grateful what Chavez has done for Mexican boxing, but when this topic comes up it's really a matter of personal opinion. Chavez's consistency over a dozen very good opposition or Sanchez's win over 2 ATG's? Kinda similar comparing Ali to Tyson if you ask me. Ali won the big ones, Tyson didn't.
