In all fairness I don't no what the feck the italians where complaning about? Maybe because they were on course for a second whiping in a few days from the Irish or maybe because the golden child dominico valintino the current world champion couldn't beat the Irish number 1 or 2 :O it was a close fight between him and DOJ but I honestly think Davy was rightly winning the fight. There may have been a few scores that Valentino should Have got but if we where in Italy the exact same or worse would be happening to us. Up until they spat the dummy tit out Mick conlon had a great win against a world and Olympic bronze medalist. I was very impressed with conlons performance. Paddy bronze boxed the lugs of the other Italian flyweight 17-2 or something. Derek thorpe was beat easily but in fairness he showed me his hand after the fight which was up a bap it looked broke to me and he said it happened in the 1st round. Fryers boxed well against de savino who was at the last olympics and won a close fight that could of went either way. Then DOJ done Valentino. Something else that may intrest yas is Eamonn O'Kane reckons he might give the pro game a lash after the commonwealth games.
Jaysus sounds like we were giving them a right hiding. No excuse for going bananas though. I agree you get home cooking wherever you go
I was covering the event for the Newsletter. The bill was an hour late starting and there was no internet signal at the venue. I had to leave after three fights because I had to get the article lodged by 9.45. (Boxing started at 8.30). I know the other reporters were in a similar boat with perhaps a deadline 20-25 mins later. Thankfully Barnes was on second (and he was excellent) to have something to lead the article with. In a nutshell, because of the delay I missed the 'spat', but irrespective, because of the initial delay the bulk of the contests wouldnt have been in the paper anyway and world class boxers would still have missed out on the publicity they deserve. Irish amateur boxing has a wonderful product, but it needs to sit down and address how it packages it. I have no doubt that an Ireland v Italy international could have sold out the Ulster Hall had a little more attention been paid to the marketing end of things. A city centre venue would also have ensured much greater and more comprehensive media coverage.

In most cases Setanta cant afford the filming so it falls to the promoter- but Setanta will only show top notch and give you details of lads that charge 20-30k.... thats in most cases i think Tommy Egan had some other deal... but i cant see Dolphil being able to afford that...I really think the state of the economy is going to affect our boxing viewing! esp me I CANT AFFORD SKY SPORTS:| on a brighter note the papers are starting to get interested in people other than Dunne.. Had a bit albeit little in a national re Paulie's win today and will have a Duddy bit in the same paper tomorrow....
