without quoting everyone who said anything similar...about styles making fights and how sergio is all bad for kelly...

i'll say this. kelly is all bad for sergio. a big pressure fighter who comes forward. sergio has been in the ring w/ two guys known for this. he fought the same way in both fights. if you don't believe me and want to believe that 10 years difference actually makes a big difference then watch the fights. watch sergio bounce around w/ his hands by his sides. watch him lunge in w/ his face exposed. watch him get knocked down in the first round despite being his most fresh (not hurt mind you but kd nonetheless). watch him get broken down throughout the course of the fight and ultimately lose. same style his whole career.

he got knocked out by margo and beat by williams. if sergio was this hopkins-esque world beating top p4p fighter like many are making him out to be he would have killed margo and williams. but it didnt happen. both men were bigger and stronger than sergio and came forward and didnt stop the attack. 10 years apart don't mean ****. he fought the same way. it is who he is and thats that. the only difference is the weight limit he fights at.

i can't wait for the round by round threads on here. so many people are gonna think kelly is ****ed every punch sergio lands early on and then all of a sudden he will be tits up and no one will understand why. he will wilt and he will get iced.

excellent post. I agree. They are making Martinez into a better fighter than he is from the Williams fight. But Pavlik will be too strong and stop Martinez in the midround I think.

Do the bookies offer a "tits up", "face down" and a "slumped in the corner"? :think

Not sure about the bookies, but that is the direction Sergio is headed. The biggest irony is that the only guy to beat Pavlik is the guy who was super respectful toward him! Now, Martinez is walking the same path McKart, Miranda, Taylor, and a few others walked; acting like KP is an easy nights work.

You were the first person to tell the truth about the fact that Martinez fights the same way now as he did ten years ago. After you started saying that I took a look for myself, and you are correct.

For the life of me I can't figure out why so many posters, and so called journalists, insist that Martinez is a difficult style for KP. It seems that people are incapable of talking about this fight without bringing up the loss to Hopkins. Well -- Sergio Martinez is barely qualified to mow BHop's lawn. It's like comparing cat **** with strawberry jam!

Martinez is what he is, and if he hasn't dropped all those bad habits in ten years, he is not going to drop them in one training camp. He may come in with a good game plan, but the first time he tries to slip his right arm around Pavlik's waist, and gets caught with a forearm across the chest and a right hand to the head, he'll revert to type and get knocked out shortly there after.

Cheers for cutting through all the pro-Pavlik/anti-Pavlik nonsense to offer the most succinct analysis to date.

    Excellent post.

Yes he got ko by Martinez but that was 10 years ago and that wasn't the same Martinez point blank. Martinez wasn't in his peak 10 years ago. And as you say style does makes fights. You say both Margarito and Williams are 2 big fighters that beat Martinez right? Well Cintron hits harder then both of them and Martinez not only beat Cintron but he beat him twice in reality with a ko and a decision win EASILY!!!! But the dumb refs and the judges ruined it. Of all the fights at middleweight Pavlik has fought, he has never fought any fighters quite like Martinez before. Taylor isn't slick as Martinez and neither is Miranda. Hell before facing Pavlik, Taylor barely and i mean barely beat Spinks. <<<Spinks a junior middleweight. Yes Pavlik has the advantage as the bigger man with better power but again style makes fights. I know it was back in the 70's but what the hell Goerge prime Foreman who was way bigger and way more stronger with better pop got tko by one of the greatest of all times in Ali who was smaller in size and don't have the pop like big George but he did it in skills and smarts. On april we'll see if Pavlik is as unstoppable as booradley, hermit like to think he is.

Pavlik is not unstoppable by any means, but at 160lbs he's still an extremely formidable opponent.

Yes he did. He acted like Pavlik didn't exist for the most part.

McKart said, "This kid has never been past nine rounds. I'm just gonna take him out in deep water and drown him."

    Steward/Taylor predicted a quick KO.

Now Martinez says he is going to beat Pavlik up and knock him out. He isn't talking about out boxing KP. He says he is going for the KO, and preditced he would get it as quick as 8 rounds.

    These guys may never learn.

ray, sergio fought the same way in both the margo and the williams fights. just watch. his mannerisms, his movement, his habits, they are all the same. the only difference is margo hits a lot harder than williams and finished him off (insert hand wrap joke). he has not changed where his hands are, how his face is completely exposed when he lunges in with that straight left, or how he eventually wears down or how he circles right into the right hand, etc. nothing has changed except that he is bigger and stronger now than he was then. hell even when he was at his most fresh in both fights his bad habits got him knocked down in the first round. not hurt, but knocked down.

as far as cintron...yes he can hit but **** just listen to the commentators. when ole harold is laughing at you then you know your not doing something right (i.e. clottey ) there was a flagpole coming up from the center of the ring and right through cintrons ass that night and all he did was rotate in a circle except when he back up to the ropes and took a knee after being hit with that viscious "headbutt." even harold was saying all he has to do is take one step and hit him. sergio circles the complete wrong way and cintron has a big right. when harold sees this then it should be obvious. cintron didnt pressure anything all night and let sergio just circle circle circle and pick him apart. what a robbery that was. sergio won that fight clearly. on a side note...how embarassing is that to cry about a headbutt when you just got counted out when it was clearly a punch  bet that film session was kinda awkward.

ray, i'm not going to sit here and tell you pavlik is the second coming of carlos monzon but my god, sergio is being very overrated here and he is not the second coming of bernard hopkins.
