A bit in the Mirror yesterday lads- interesting!

    Jonny Stapleton

Kenneth Egan will play a major role in the IABA’s revolutionary new World Boxing Series.

Irelands most decorated amateur boxer has signed up to be a part of the exciting new format along with John Joe Nevin and John Joe Joyce and could fight for one of 12 cities around the world from September on.

The World Boxing Series is a completely new concept and is being billed as new ‘beginning for the global boxing world’.

It will see four franchises, or cities, in three conferences, Europe, Asia and North America compete in a league tournament under transformed rules over a 12 month period.

Teams in each conference will face off against each other in four ‘matches’, which consist of five bouts, with the winner of each conference and the second best runner up competing in a playoff.

Each of the 12 cities has to fulfil a quota of boxers affiliated to its countries governing body but will be allowed three fighters from different countries.

Hence Egan, Joyce and Nevin could be competing in a competition, that is scored on a round system rather than a points system, for anyone from Moscow to Dehli, depending on how bidding develops.

It is a format that the AIBA believes will allow boxers to compete professionally yet under amateur guise so they can keep their Olympic aspirations alive.

The Irish trio will only be released to represent Ireland at elite level and its possible they may not be allowed fight in next years Irish National Championships. That would mean while Egan would be eligible to fight in London 2012 he may not get the chance to make it 11 national titles in a row.

“I can confirm John Joe Nevin, John Joe Joyce and Kennth Egan have all signed guaranteed participation agreements for the WSB. That means they will be competing in one of the 12 franchises from November this year. Our aim is to have the world's top boxers competing in the WSB and the three Irish boxers who have signed are perfect examples, all with an excellent pedigree at international level,” AIBA WSB spokesman Paul O’Neill confirmed to the Mirror.

“I can not confirm which city they will fight for at this stage, as the boxers will go through to a draft stage in which the franchises will be able to bid for the top boxers. But I can confirm they will be involved.

“The boxers will remain eligible to participate in the Olympic Games and selected international tournaments at elite level. We will be working closely with all national boxing governing bodies to ensure that boxers can participate in the national championships where these are relevant to Olympic Games qualification. But it depends on when the Irish Championships will take place. If they are during the WSB season it could be difficult for the three boxers to be released,” O’Neill confirmed.

This is not going to help medal hopes whats so ever

they will be fighting in 5x3 format using something simular to the 10 point must system no head gear, vests ect..

not exactly ideal preperation for the current IABA points system which will be inplace at olympic qualification tournments....

Also Olympian's that have turned over since the last olympics will be eligable to sign a contract with the WBS and fight at the next Olympics if they do....

Had an indeph talk with Mike Costello about this last september I'm just thankful more of our boxers havent been signed as regards our olympic chances

but it is definately a good road for boxers who were thinking of turning pro

the money is quite generous i reckon kenny egan would be on 100k a year maybe more

nevin and joyce would be on less but still on good money

Simple anwser -yes!!! IMO Davy has a perfect professional style, good compact boxer, aggressive, can punch abit and has a massive engine. Your absoloutly right there's no shame in losing to eric, he's in the form of his life and from sparring him I know how tricky he can be. Davy has a good relationship with Gerry storey and some of his best performances have came when Gerry was in his corner eg against donovan in the featherweight final and against valentino the other night. Gerry is the best in the business at choosing tactics for a fight. I would love Davy to turn over some day and if he did be part of our camp. He's an amazing inside fighter but could improve on his long range boxing and Gerry would be the man to help him.

    Happy paddys day feckers!!!

the lad said the scoring is a 'must' scoring system as in 10-9, 10-8, 10-7-depending on how the round looser does.. he also said scores are shown at the end of every round.

he wouldnt reveal what type of cash was involved but he did say they predict it will be telivised around the world

Bleeding Paddys day. Ask my bollocks. I'm going to hide in my bunker for the day and say 'bah humbug' a lot. I can't stand the Paddywhackery.

That thing Egan is talking about is stupid. If he wants to make cash then go pro. As Paddy said that format ain't going to help anyones medal hopes

They have tv deal in asia already

if anyone is interested in the info heres some here
    http://www.aiba.org/default.aspx?pId=2996

figures I had quoted were 150k a year for the top boxers which would be the likes of olympic medalists (Kenny Egan a good example)

then its staggered down i think the lowest i was told was 70k a year

the salaries are in US dollars

ive heard bigger sums quoted though in certain articles

I am seriously thinking about heading over to the Mitchell v Katsidis fight - I think it will be a *******. Williams v Sexton, De Gale fighting for his first title, Frankie Gavin and Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounders, plus Del Boy Chisora.
