True...and because it was the very first held here there's the 'theatre goer' boost in attendace. I reckon if UFC come again soon they'll do similar numbers again though. If they held the next one at Etihad Stadium (the one with the retractable roof) in Melbourne and wound the seats in (forming a rectangle), like they do for the soccer, they could do some serious business! The stadium has had a few 50,000 plus crowds before, and as much as you're not going to do those sorts of numbers, who knows how many would turn up?
Am I the only one who uses the defult format instead of the black and gold and can't see the writing when blokes use light coloured text??? Anyway... I wouldn't worry too much about a one off international event. At the most it will come here once a year and that will not cause boxing any problems. It's not like the local cage fighting shows are drawing anywhere near the same numbers. As Leon says, big events get big numbers.
I use the default too. When i cant see the text i just highlight it. I dont think its too much to worry about. UFC has its crowd. Boxing has its crowd. UFC/MMA isnt taking away boxing fans despite what some believe.
That is another interesting point daz. If it is truly a different crowd. Good to know someone else likes the defult style too
We disagree there Daz. Where do you think the UFC crowd came from? Sure many of them were martial arts / non boxing people, but many of them also are/were boxing fans. Fortunately some, myself included, go for both styles (I still put boxing first by a fair margin). But there'll alos be a percentage of UFC fans that have been lost to boxing. One of the trouble signs is that UFC DVD's are filling more and more space on the shelves of video shops and DVD retail outlets, and boxing is running a very distant second!
UFC has more potential for better marketing, DVDs, etc as it is a "brand" of mixed matial arts. Boxing doesn't have a "brand" per se it is simply seen as a sport.
When was the last time you saw a Pacquiao fight dvd available commercially for sale? I'm talking in major chains, not mail order business'.
I guess we do disagree but thats just my opinion. I think people that are going to be MMA fans were going to be MMA fans and boxing fans were going to be boxing fans. I am not saying there arent a few MMA took from boxing but very very few and not enough to count. People say its MMA V Boxing but there are so many combat sports so I dont see why its just those two sports.
Why is that Leon? I always thought it was not because big chains arent interested but the rights becoming available. Whoever it is like Top Rank or HBO not making them available for DVD purchase?
No problems on disagreeing - it'd be a bloody boring forum if we all agreed on everything. There are certainly many, many combat sports. But boxing and UFC are the only ones I can think of that get both sizable crowds and mainstream media interest in English speaking countries (of course there's non-English speaking exeptions like Sumo in Japan etc). So to my mind they are competing for slices of the same combat sports watching crowd cake, or at least some overlapping slices of it anyway. But hey we can disagree...
Yeah I see what your saying and that's definitely a view that many take. As I said I look at it like would you say soccer is taking boxings crowd? Obviously not. I see it the same as MMA and boxing. Neither is taking the others crowd as they are two different sports. It wouldnt kill boxing to take a few tips from the way UFC runs things but. Such as stacked undercards (the way we used to do) and legitmate champions. The best always fighting the best. Better in between rounds/fights entertainment. The fight at Cowboys stadium seems good for the in between rounds and just the atmosphere with the massive screen, but the card was a let down.
