After some careful deliberation, I will have to say no. He did not fight any elite fighters in their prime. Kessler was not elite as his his recent fights have shown. Calzaghe avoided all the real challenges in his prime: Hopkins at 160, Jones at 168/175, Michalczewski at 175. He fought nobodies and had a decent run at the end of his career, with the two names being about 8 years or so past their best. Verdict: Not an ATG.
he never ducked hopkins you cretin, it was the other way round. jones and DM were in different weight divisions at the time. none of you can actually come up with legitimate names that calzaghe ducked and those he didn't fight in his weight division like ottke, infact patently ducked calzaghe. people just want to dis-credit calzaghe with made up bull****. pavlik was exposed as a complete muppett by a man who people criticised joe for fighting in his previous fight glen johnson has lost 13 times. if joe had beaten johnson, his name would of ranked alongside tocker pudwill on his resume.
Des3995 - Your right Pavlik did step up, at a young age against an old fighter (In some eyes) and got totally beat. Besides Taylor who has Pavlik beat? And Remember Taylor struggled with a bunch of LMWs before he lost to Pavlik. Also Taylor had Pavlik staggering round the ring, something Carl Froch wasnt doing when put down by Taylor. At SMW Pavlik couldnt make the same dent on Taylor, who was nowhere near as good as Calzaghe. If you compare their careers so far, besides Taylor who as mentioned struggled with a bunch of LMWs, who has Pavlik beaten? Compared to Calzaghe who at this stage had beaten Eubank and Reid, which is better. Axe - No to what? I asked who Calzaghe should have fought in his division? Hopkins was #1 LHW when Calzaghe beat him and still is on some polls. Is that not elite? (Im not saying it is, but just a question. If it is it looks bad on Dawson) Hopkins avoided Calzaghe, you know the story by now surely, dont you? Jones and Michalczewski were in the division above before Calzaghe even entered world class. You know this. Nobody is as big a critic to Hagler and Hopkins for defending in there own division, often against smaller fighters without stepping up. Why do you say Michalczewski fought nobodies? He won at LHW, the WBO, WBA and IBF titles, made over 20 defences of his WBO belt, and beat V HILL, G Rocchigiani, M Griffin etc Won the WBO CW title and was 46 -0 before losing contesiously past his prime. No one asked if hes an ATG. Headbanger - Thankyou for reading the post and answering the question
The question was, who did Calzaghe avoid in the SMW division, who would fight him. Not his ATG standing
This is false. Joe never made any such demand. The fight never got close to the stage where location was even an issue. In fact, there was never even a time when a fight would have been realistic. Except in hindsight. And Hopkins was offered a fight with Calzaghe in the states. And he got to name his price. And he still backed out. BTW, prime Jones would have beaten any version of Calzaghe.
I couldnt give full details of how far negotiations got between Jones and Calzaghe, but Jones was in the division above, not the SMW division. Its a fight that wouldnt shock me if Calzaghe won, but to say he would of or wouldnt of beaten Jones is pointless. But Jones for all his greatness has the PEDs cloud over him. If Calzaghe had of beaten Pavlik, I doubt he would of got credit for fighting a smaller fighter who seems good but a bit limted. Pavlik has only beaten Taylor at MW and even then he was nearly stopped and staggering round the ring before coming back, and when he fought Taylor at SMW he couldnt make the same impact. For people who think Calzaghe should have fought Pavlik, Calzaghe has a win over the guy that totally dominated Pavlik
So Jones who was fighting in the division above is the only fighter anyone can think of that Calzaghe should have gone to America to face? Thats if Jones would have faced him (Im sure he would have), as Hopkins and Ottke didnt want to know and Collins retired in the build up to meeting Calzaghe. Just a note in 03 Jones stepped up to HW to fight Ruiz, this was before Calzaghe stopped Mitchell. Does anyone think back then the fight would have really sold? Also for all Jones greatness he has the PEDs cloud hanging over him.
Joe is like the soldier in the middle of a great war who jumps in a fox hole and shoots victims as they go by, then he returns home and is hailed as a great hero. The hide out in england in the weak SMW division and ***** slapped like a girl . . . I am so tired reading threads about how great he is
This isnt a thread about how great he was, I couldnt care less how great he was or wasnt. The question was who did he not fight that would fight him. Collins retired in the build up to fighting him and Ottke and Hopkins didnt want to know. In 03 Jones stepped up to HW before Calzaghe had even fought Mitchell, so would that fight have sold? As for hiding in England, hide there from who? He beat Brewer, Mitchell, Manfredo, Lacy and Sheika from America and also Reid, Woodhall, Veit (who holds a win and loss to current WBO LHW champ Braehmer), Bika, Kessler, Starie and Eubank. Jones was in the division above, and also Jones has the PEDs cloud hanging over him
He's not a top 5 British fighter. And I wouldn't have him in my top 100 P4P. British List 1-Driscoll 2-Buchanan 3-Lennox 4-Ted Lewis 5-Jack Berg No place for Calzaghe there, and I'm not certain I'd rank him over Benny Lynch either to be honest.
Maybe, maybe not, I couldnt comment much on some of the fighters you mentioned, but.............. (as below)
