Come on, it'll be nice for Boo Radley and Hermit to actually have something fresh to talk about for a change...

    Gary Lockett
    Marco Antonio Rubio
    Miguel Angel Espino

Two that wouldn't have made a middleweight world top 40 list at the time and one that was top fifteen if we're being fairly generous.

So, can anyone name a holder of a major belt (WBC or WBA, IBF from the mid-80s, WBO from post-90s) that has had a lower quality first three defences?

Just a quick glance but umm...

Wlad...after winning it for the 1st time off of Chris Byrd he goes on to beat some guys named Derrick Jefferson and CHarles Bufford, and then beats Botha.

    That was easy.

yeah, nothing to really brag about. can't argue there.

but you know good and damn well why he fought lockett...what would have happened w/ a calzaghe fight is not the point. its also not his fault there was a rematch clause w/ the former champ above the mw limit....which i never fully understood. and it was when talks w/ williams broke down for a mw defense (not assigning blame) that the hopkins fight was made.

**** just hasnt worked out according to plan. he's young and has time. he'll be fine. martinez is a very good start. wouldnt you agree?

Martinez is a light middleweight who hasn't actually beaten anyone of note and is coming off a loss. It is actually a considerable step up on Pavlik's previous defences, but that's only in relative terms...

Hmm, Mundine only held what was basically an interim title under another name in the WBA's quest to have ever more belts though. It technically counts, but not really sure I want to count it.

Mundine did not win a major belt...he was a glorified no1 contender.
