Calzaghe and Hatton - who do you hold more respect for?

    Im a little biased....

Hatton became a name when he beat Kostya Tyuzu
Calzaghe became a name when he beat Jeff Lacy
Hatton was younger when this happened

Hatton was younger than Calzaghe when he made his debut in America

Hatton fought better opposition? Mayweather, Pacquiao, Tyuzu...
Calzaghe fought over the hill Jones Junior, past his prime Hopkins and over rated Lacy

Calzaghe defended his WBO belt against bums before finally gaining other belts against Kessler.

Hatton won the IBF against Tyuzu, WBA v Maussa, WBA welterweight against Collazo.

The question is, who do you hold more RESPECT for? Respect meaning fighting the best, moving to America, testing yourself against the best...

Thoughts? Especially American ESB boxing fans......

Calzaghe, because he was smart enough not to fight big names in their prime

Hatton on the other hand started to believe his own hype and tried to fight world class fighters and got destroyed

If Hatton just stayed in the UK and retired, delusional British boxing fans would now talk about how Hatton would have beaten Mayweather or Pacman, the same way they talk about Calzaghe being able to beat RJJ in his prime.

Calzaghe - he beat the best. Hatton not only lost to the best, he got KTFO.

Hatton by far, he may have come up short against the very best but at least he was willing to get in the ring with them unlike Calzaghe.

Obviously I would like to see the best fight the best, but it isn't always a good business decision.

British fans are the most delusional in the world and will always tell you that their fighter is the best in the world even if he has never beaten anyone.

Just look at Haye. Haye has never beaten anyone at HW and people compare him to Muhammad Ali. If Haye had fought Vitali instead of Valuev, he would have got destroyed and would have lost all his drawing power in the UK. Instead he chose to fight Valuev and will now fight a bunch of B- and C-Level fighters in the UK and make lots of money while British fans will talk about how he would dominate the Klitschkos.

I agree with this but this thread is about which fighter you respect more....you've gone off topic.

How can you respect a fighter for avoiding the best?

Agreed Hatton went too high in class, but he was a world class fighter who i'm sure at the time believed he'd beat Mayweather...

How was it not good business to fight the best for Hatton when he became more famous and made more money than Calzaghe in a shorter period of time?

You are right to a certain extend

Obviously I respect Hatton for fighting the best, although it wasn't very smart on his part
