Duran (of Montreal form) vs Hopkins (of Trinidad form) at 160:

Let us assume Duran went to the 160 fight with the preparation and mentality of that 1st Leonard fight, is there a way he would have beaten Hopkins?

Hopkins was not an inexperienced fighter like Ray was when Duran fought him. Hopkins would wipe the floor with Duran and Hopkins would be the older fighter.

 

I love Duran but this match-up is one he has no chance in. Hopkins is too big and too crafty on the inside to let Duran force him to fight his fight as he did in Montreal.

 

.....and Duran was'nt crafty????


None the less, Duran does'nt beat elites past 147 lbs.

......that Duran could not prepare himself in that way and weigh above the welterweight limit.

Hopkins takes a clear decision.

P4P and prime for prime I like Duran by clear decision, and there is no way craftiness is going to get Hopkins anywhere against Duran......you dont get nastier than Duran who was known to low blow, elbow, and thumb his way to an advantage.

Hopkins best bet is to keep the fight clean.

 

Got to favour Hopkins but his ability on the inside is frequently overrated, he is an excellent spoiler but he isn't particularly active and doesn't rank with the great inside fighters. A great inside fighter would give him a tough time with their activity on the inside, his timing on the outside and movement would be his comfort zone against someone like the smaller Duran.

Hopkins has never really fought anyone capable on the inside, so i think it is unfair that he has earned the wrap of being a great inside fighter based on shutting down the robotic smaller Trinidad. His strong point has always been on the outside, see his recent performances vs Pavlik who barely landed a punch, with Ornelas, a very much lesser fighter who was able to make some rounds competitive by his sheer activity on the inside. Obviously this is an old Hopkins, but i feel the point still stands closer to his prime (Hopkins had already shifted away from the boxer puncher that he was earlier by the Trinidad fight) and its particularly relevant against one of the more active inside fighters of the modern era.

Leonard showed better infighting skills in that fight than Hopkins has ever displayed.

Definitely, any dirty in fighting would lead to the more active Duran racking up valuable points by punching anything he could get ahold of. This version of Duran had also had better defense on the inside/short-medium range than all but a slim few in history.

 

Nope. Duran doesn't come up to 160lbs and beat the experienced, crafty Hopkins.

 

Duran is crafty, yes, but he won't be moreso than Hopkins. Not enough to give him any material advantage. The fight potentially has some point deductions if either guy gets dirty at all because neither would let a shot go. They'd be returning cheapshots if need be.

 

Staying on the topic of dirtyness, I'd love to see Hopkins fight Hamsho, be one of the most dirtiest bouts of all-time

I never really thought of Hopkins as a great inside fighter, I think he is most effective boxing from range while not putting himself in danger with his defense.

 

Duran never beat an elite below 147 either.

 

Guess you never saw his 1st 30 fights.
