Yeah read that one, great read. Theres a film about Ward and his brother coming out ater this year I think, Mark Wahlberg is playing Ward and Christian Bale his brother. ONe of my favourite fighters, those wars with Gatti were epic. Nice youtube clip here: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svt5xxgd9W4[/ame]
Carlito, Kimball's book Four Kings is a magnificent read. He uses quotes from some of the great boxing writers while they are reporting at ringside - my God, there was some writers back in the 1980s. Great anecdotes about all four of the greats. I pissed myself laughing at how Tommy Hearns had to take a deep breath and hesitate before answering questions in press conferences. Steward told him to because always his first instinct was to say, "I'll KO this mother****er, that mother****er etc." Kimball will soon be at one of your fights too I would imagine, if his health stays okay, please God. Loves coming here to watch cards. He was in Tallaght for Eddie-Oisin last year.
Kimball is the man. He's up there with Schulberg, Runyon and the rest. I forgot to mention a bestseller coming your way in 2014(ish) 'How I Beat Absoultely Everybody and Won Everything in Sight, The Carl Frampton Story' written by me
Dark Trade by Donald MacRae is another good un. Agreed 4 Kings is an excellent read. Kimball is a great writer and seems to be at most of the fights over here.
Dark Trade is a good book alright. He had good access to some really intersting people at huge times in their various careers. However, McRae always comes across as a self serving wanker so that takes the gloss off it for me somewhat
NO. That is just wrong. Kimball is possibly my favourite current boxing writer, he is very good, Four Kings is a classic, but he cannot be placed in the same sentence as Schulberg.
First thing tomorrow I will be on amazon to get 4kings, micky wards autobio, the don king yoke and maybe a few others. My granda has hands of stone so I'll swipe that on him. I'll get the fighting Irish aswell. Read the pocket rockets and thought it was abit repetitive, but not bad, I look forward to Reading your book bam bam
Schulberg was great but he was very much of his era. Kimball has gone from the 70's to the nowsies! He'll be remembered as a great 80's writer when he clocks out I reckon. Actually, did McIlvanney write any books? Always thought he was overhyped but he was a very good writer all the same. Aye Carl, it'll be a cracking read! You won't believe half the stuff that happens :good a journey of epic proportions guaranteed
The last fight Schulberg was at ringside for was Cotto-Clottey and he was still sribbling notes and scoring fights from his tv right up to his passing last year. He spanned numerous eras and saw the likes of Benny Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Ali, Four Kings, Tyson, Lewis et al. That is only one of the reasons why he was so special. 'McIlvanney on Boxing'. I havent read it yet, but Schulberg describes McIlvanney as the Dean of boxing writers. They were big mates and McIlvanney wrote a brilliant tribute at Schulberg's funeral. I am more familiar with McIlvanney football literature and it is quality. Both were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
