the fact that for many fighters, their ticket into stardom is beating oscar says a lot. still, I'm curious, would Tyson come close? he was incredibly popular back then but I have no idea what the numbers are for him...
Tyson could have been the Wilt Chamberlain of boxing PPVs (Broke records so hard it will be unsurpassed forever) if only he was able to sustain his great skills and talent starting from the mid 1980s up to his retirement. ODLH was able to sustain his skills and talent (popularity will follow) from the moment he entered the pros up until his retirement. A great PPV star needs great talent, plus great charisma or great mystique.

The anticipation for an upcoming Tyson fight was much stronger than any of the top PPV contenders. Even if he was gonna face some dude named Peter McNeely or some New York cab driver, it was an event not to be missed.
I remember that time when me and around 4 friends were waiting for the tyson-holyfield 1 fight. All my friends were talking about how tyson would blamboozle holyfield to kingdom come. These are casual boxing fans who have no idea who holyfield is, all they know is that tyson is the baddest man in the planet. We were all so noisy and excited before the fight. In contrast, we were all very silent during fight, nobody knows what to say. Smiles on our faces were erased and we were all disaapointed after the fight.
Hehe. The earliest complete Tyson PPV fight (free on Philippine TV but with tons of ads) that I saw "live" was his fight vs Spinks. The earliest ODLH fight I can remember being shown here was vs Molina.
I have heard of dela hoya even before he went to win the olympic gold medal. After he won the gold medal, he was anticipated by USA just like they anticipated the first fight of Sugar Ray Leonard. I think it was his sixth or seventh fight that was shown here but it was just a replay and hoya did not disappoint. I always read articles about hoya and I read an article where he said that he would retire at an early age of 26.
jeez, I just realized that that majority of the de la Hoya and Tyson fights I got to watch live on tv were their losing efforts Oscar vs Trinidad Mosley Hopkins Mayweather Pacquiao Mike vs Holyfield (I and II) Lewis Golota (the only live fight I watched that Mike won) I was pretty much just a casual fan back then, I only got to watch their winning efforts online when i started getting really into boxing...
Floyd right now has the only chance to pass him....i think he is 4th behind Holyfield right now...couple in Mosley fight and HOPEFULLY Pac fight and he should be on his heels....he still may need 1 or 2 more big fights to catch him though.
