Mike DeJohn makes short work of Charlie Powell

I remember reading an interview of George Chuvalo crediting Mike DeJohn and Foreman as the two hardest punchers he ever faced.

 

Only a minute but, which would you rather see that or a Wlad 12rd
bore?
DeJohn appeared to have power in both hands, and let his hands go as soon as he was in range.

For Charlie Powell fans--I did think he looked impressive up until that first left hook landed.

Haven't seen Mike DeJohn's name in an age. Remember watching him spar every day with a motor-mouthed Olympic Gold medalist at the Fifth St. Gym in miami.

The brash kid was being touted as the next heavyweight king. Don't know what they were lookin' at; I, sure as hell, didn't see it. He didn't look like he had the frame to be a full-fledged heavy, never fought inside 'n shied from mixing it up. Plus, he couldn't punch a lick -- just pity-patted with his left 'n got on his horse.

Thought sure the first solid shot DeJohn landed would put him on the moon, and end all the buzz for good. So much for me as a talent scout.

You are a good judge of acting talent, though.


One thing about DeJohn. He could look great against the second level guys like Miteff, Powell, and Hunter, but Liston, Machen, and Folley all ko'd him.

You couldn't be more on the money, OF. JG was a local kid who made good BIG TIME. He was no faux screen tough guy. He was the REAL DEAL -- NEVER backed down. Eventually cost him his career...and his life at 39.

Just curiously. Could you explain? I thought Garfield died from a long-standing heart condition at a time when physicians could not deal with such problems as well as they do today.

 

I believe he got blacklisted and the travails of this caused undo stress.

He was a great actor, no doubt. And we certainly missed out on much more of a great career due to his early death.

 

He did have heart problems, OF, but it was more than aggravated by being blackballed, going from being the #1 box office star in the world to a pariah, unable to get a job, prevented from doing what he loved most.
