Have the Klitschkos ever proven their no. 1?

It's often stated on here that Haye will not be heavyweight champion until he beats a Klitschko this is a view i tend to agree with, using this logic can either Klitschko be considered heavyweight champion.

The thing that irritates me about the Klitschkos is while they are both around 1 and 2 in the division can never fight. For a boxing fan this is very frustrating.

Clearly the Klitschkos are number 1 and 2 at HW at the moment. But I was wondering if there has ever been a fight involving a Klitschko where 1 and 2 in the division were fighting that they won.

Naturally they have not fought each other but which Klitschko fight would you consider to have involved 1 and 2 at that time.

Lewis v Vitaly springs to mind.

    I agree,

I just cannot think of a fight where they beat the number 1

or as number 1 beat the person considered number 2

I just think this is a strange situation for fighters so recognised as the best in division.

neither Peter nor Byrd would of been considered number 1 on these occasions.

Byrd was considered #1 at the time. Who did you think was #1 instead? When Wladimir fought Chagaev it was for the Ring title, and since Chagaev held the WBA belt longer than Vitali held his WBC it could be argued that he was #2 when he fought Wladimir.

That's 2 occasions for Wladimir, thanks for playing.

When someone figures out how to handle Wlad's jab, then i'll worry about a different #1.

I just checked what was around when Wlad fought Byrd youre probably right.

My god what a depressing decade at HW.

as for Chagaev how long he held the title is meaningless his reign consisted of beating Skelton and Drummond. I think its hard to argue that Chagaev was one of best 2 heavyweights in world in June 2009

thanks for pointing out my error regarding Byrd
