A lot of celebrities attended this fight, but which other boxers were there? Were Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey there? Floyd Patterson? And if so, what did they say about the fight?
Ring Magazine descibred Joe Louis as recieving "the biggest ovation of the night" when he was introduced. I think.
March 8, 1971,a night I can Never forget...My friend without my knowledge, bought a ticket for the Frazier-Ali fight...He surprised me with the ticket a few hours before the bout...The air was so thick with tension, before the fight...When the announcer finished his introduction of the celebrities, there was such a clamor for one ex champion who's name was omitted,by accident...Better late than never, Jack Dempsey was finally introduced to the audience, getting a rousing ovation, which the old Manassa Mauler, richly deserved, for he was at his peak the greatest fistic attraction in boxing history...What a great night, and what a great fight, for me...
That was easily the biggest sporting event I ever saw, and that goes back to the 1960s. Looking back at old newspaper columns there were stories about the fight dailey for months leading up to the fight.
Another thing I recall about the Ali=Frazier Fight,MSG in 1971 entering MSG with our tickets and seeing the glitz and glamour ,and clothing the fans were wearing that eventfull evening...What fur coats were being worn, and that was by the MEN...Yessir. I'm so sorry I never saved my ticket stub that night...But I did save my ticket stub, for Sept.12,1951,for the Ray Robinson/Randy Turpin fight at the old Polo Grounds, N.Y.Still treasure that ticket stub....
Jim Morrisonwas there huh? That is so cool even more so considering he passed away about three months later. For what it's worth Mick Jagger and Keith Richards attended the Ali-Shavers fight, also held in the Garden in 1977, Ali always brought out the heavy hitters to his big fights.
