Julio Cesar Chavez i have no doubt he would beat duran at 135 ....

    Sal Sanchez is another option

    Maybe The Pacman

Guzman was an ATG in the making who never got his big shot, just because he didnt get the big fights doesnt mean he hasnt got ATG skills. Roach didnt want to put Pacquaio anywhere near Guzman for good reason.

He has excellent evasive movement, speed and countering that would trouble Duran imo, prime for prime I pick Duran but I'm talking about a bad night here and Guzman is as good as Dejesus

Not sure if anyone who started lower beats Duran on his best night but Mayweathers defensive style is the best imo based on the problems Duran had with such stylists past prime, which isnt necessarily reflective of how he'd deal with them in his prime, or is it...........

Guzman is nowhere near Dejesus imo.Dejesus was a complete fighter with very heavy hands at the weight

Guzman is a flashy 2nd rate defensive specialist with far more style than actual substance, even at his best way below lightweight i was never convinced...and i like my defensive specialists.I can't abide the consistent level of sloppyness in that kind of fighter(defensive specialist/cutie counterpuncher) he shows.

I think he's a better bet for someone who would get horribly brutalised and exposed by any really top notch lightweight. He would never be able to keep duran off him, and Duran is the better slip and counter man of the two by some distance, taking away his usual trump card with ease.

    Guzman?

I used to be pretty high on Guzman in his 122-126 days but he just never became the fighter I thought he could.

That fact he barely got past Barrios tells you everything you need to know about how a fight goes with him and Duran.

He would slap Duran across the face and cop hiding for the insult.

Yeah, he was at least promising at one point, and i'd have been happy to be wrong about him, but he's prettyl clearly shown aover the past few years that he belongs nowhere a discussion with all-time or borderline greats at 130 or 135.

Arguello or Armstrong are the only ones that's been mentioned that I'd give a chance.

    And Guzman.......that's beyond a joke.

Actually, I think I'd give Pep a good chance as well. Maybe the best out of him, Arguello and Armstrong.

100% correct on Guzman.I still trying to understand how anyone could even say that he had a shot to beat prime Duran.Armstrong maybe, but Duran ko'd 2 guys that beat Arguello in Marcel and Fernandez.Besides,Duran is a stylistic nightmare for Alexis.

Yeah you could be right there, although Marcel might have improved some by the time he fought Alexis.

I think Guzman was just thrown in there as a random choice anyway, it can't really be a serious pick.

    :-(

I don't envision a fighter who was man-handled by Saddler down at 126lbs to move up two divisions and evade Roberto Duran. I think in order to beat Duran at his best, and because we're talking fantasy than we must assume for the sake of argument that he would be at his best, then his foe must be able to get a reaction, which is to say, if Willie throws a right hand, Duran is going to have to feel it. He wouldn't though, and I don't see any reason to give a fighter who fought almost exclusively at 126 the benefit of the doubt against arguably the best Lightweight of all time.

You don't think Duran possessed the speed of hand and foot to close the distance on Pep and enforce his superior size and strength? I think it'd end pretty badly for Willie, actually.

story here concerning the Guzman camp...

I found a clip on youtube title the Sycuan Warrior. It is a tribute to Guzman with his best highlights. Anyway there was a song playing in the background (dominicano soy) that went really well with the clip. I sent a mail to the video poster, praising Guzman and asking what the name of the song he used was. This was the reply i got..

Hello, please send a money order or check for the value of $24.95 to this address if you are interested in finding out more about the artist of Joan Guzman's entrance song:

    Glenn Quiroga
    Sycuan Ringside Promotions
    1400 Hill St.
    El Cajon, CA 92020

    Thank you,
    G.

to which i replied something along the lines of... "haha get ****ed! are you serious?"

    to which he replied:

If you don't respect Sr. Guzman and his promoter, then that is your choice. We don't respect you to begin with.

    Thank you,
    G.

unrelated but i found it funny

If we are talking a fully focused duran at his absolute best from around 1977-78 then i'd pick no one full stop at lightweight to beat him never mind someone moving up in weight.

If duran was a little off the ones i'd give the best chance to take him would be mayweather, chavez and armstrong

Armstrong has always been a favorite over Duran in my mind. I think he was stronger and sturdier at that weight, and more disciplined in his attack. I think it's a bit questionable how well Duran under 135 pounds can handle someone who can match his strength and work him to the body.

It's possible Arguello or Chavez could beat him as well, both those two are a bit more debatable IMO.

Duran is going to be comming at a guy in Mayweather who is taller and has a longer reach. Mayweather is fast and has very good timing. With all due respect to the boxing skills of Roberto Duran. I don't think he can out box Mayweather on the backfoot, or that he would even try to do so.
I think that Duran is going to press the action against Mayweather. Mayweather as he is known to do might need a few rounds to figure Duran out. When he dose figure him out Duran will be walking into counter left hooks and stright rights. Mayweather also won't stay in one spot. We saw in Duran's second bout with Ray Leonard that this bothers him.
I think that when you factor the abilities of both boxers their styles and size. Floyd Mayweather Jr. would beat Roberto Duran regaurdless of weight.
