What does everyone make of Charles in that picture? The story goes that Charles was nearly out when he found this magical barrage, but in that picture he looks straight backed, and although you could argue he looks hurt in that picture (if you wanted to) he doesn't look badly hurt.
It's tough to say anything based on a single picture. I imagine he must have been quite hurt based on newspaper reports. This newspaper makes a joke about the Charles win only being a "fluke": http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AIBAJ&dq=ezzard charles moore&pg=1592,3360223
Yeah, it definitely is hard based upon one picture, but i'd expect to see some sign. I think this is perhaps because I had read reports before seeing the picture, I expected to see a Charles barely hanging together and lashing out, but that is splendid form. He's even stepping through the punch. I'm not one for lucky punches whatever the circumstances, but that one looks like a really good one. But, as you say.
For all you know his legs might have been jelly, I know you want to be able to find things out but its not going to happen
Yeah, I saw that. What I read, I got to believe that Charles was hurt, but to what degree, I don't know, people seem very satisfied that he was "out on his feet", but i'm not so sure. Like PP says, we'll never really know for sure.
That era in boxing was the ultimate peak for me. All the guys like Charles, Moore, Burley, Williams, Marshall, Bivins etc... were all crafty as hell boxer punchers with the boxing gamesmanship of a fox. Really crafty and amazing fighters, really wish we could have seen them in their full glory (with footage of their bouts with each other).
