Fair point but the Warburton draws were a joke to be honest. O'Brien did all but disembowel the guy and still never got the decision. Also if he is a soft touch then Haughian or Thompson etc should have nothing to fear from stepping through the ropes with O'Brien. The guy just wants a pop at the Irish title and to find another boxer eligible for a Irish title to fight so that he can get closer to it. If he had a bout in Ireland he would sell tickets - he has links in Mayo and grew up in Dublin where much of his family and friends still are and also has strong links in the Irish community in Manchester and Burnley - all would love a trip to Dublin or Belfast to see the guy fight = £££££££.
I would have posted you my copy of that one, if I had known you were after it. The last chapter of Schulberg's Ringside is the dogs bollocks - he is talking about Mike Jacobs from first hand experience. I am just back from Eastons - they still havent got Barney Eastwoods book in - I have ordered it - should be in tomorrow.
http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/BN08/detail.asp?id=1644 Interesting stuff here guys it appears that Macklin has vacated and Barker is going to fight for the vacant title against the French guy that Lee beat in Limerick last year. Also I read on another forum that Michael Sweeney is going to be in the next Prizefighter at cruiserweight! Think Herbie Hide will be in it as well.
Breaking News: Darren Barker lands European title shot Danny Flexen speaks to one happy man This content is protected VACATED: Macklin is hoping for bigger things DARREN BARKER has been handed a surprise shot at the European middleweight title and, better still, he will vie for the continental crown in front of what is virtually a home crowd. Is the Barker-Matthew Macklin domestic superfight finally been agreed, I hear you cry. Unfortunately the answer is no, Macklin having given up the European crown, presumably in the hopes of furthering his world title ambitions. British and Commonwealth king Barker will face former EU champ Affif Belghecham of France for the vacant strap on Matchrooms April 9 bill at Alexandra Palace, which is just three train stops from Darrens East Barnet home. What a nice surprise, said a delighted Barker this morning, shortly before popping out to buy some decking (lifestyles of the rich and famous eh?). Ive had one eye on the European title for a while but I was always looking at fighting Macklin or Khoren Gevor. Id love to have fought Macklin for it but I respect him for giving the title up so I could get my chance. This is absolutely huge. To have all three belts would make me massively proud. Im very grateful to Matchroom Ive got a job to do now. Belghecham, 19-4-1 (4), may be 35 but the tough Frenchman has never been stopped and gave Irish hope Andy Lee a major scare before going down on points over 10 rounds in November. Belghecham holds his domestic title and never lost the EU belt in the ring (he was stripped after the Lee reverse). I didnt see the Lee fight but Andys no mug, stated Barker. I heard he rocked him at the end. But it doesnt bother me who the opponent is Im not one wholl sit and watch tapes, although I know [trainer] Tony [Sims] watches loads. I like that game of chess, having to suss your opponent out, I like that side of boxing. Ive got a good eye and tend to suss people out pretty quickly. I got that from my amateur grounding when you only have four rounds you have to work your opponent out quickly and Ive kept it. Belghecham was a passive observer for eight rounds against Lee but came on strong in the final two and had the Irishman clinging on in the final minute. The Frenchman claimed that his wife having a baby had disrupted his training for the fight, so the better prepared version who will journey to Alexandra Palace may be a threat. However, there is no question Barker starts favourite and if he takes the title and deals with mandatory contender Gevor opportunities at world level cannot be far way. Im not looking that far ahead yet, Barker insisted. Ive just had this massive opportunity come my way Im not getting too carried away. Ive done everything the traditional way so far Southern Area title, British and Commonwealth and now the European so the final piece of the puzzle is obviously a world title. But Im only 27 I think by the end of the year Ill be ready.
Was talking to him earlier he said he got the call but he is going to give a miss on it at 200 and hope they give him a call for the next light heavyweight also a good chance of Colie Barrett being on the undercard of Lee aswell
