Yeah, Charles looks plenty good here. I don't see a huge difference in sharpness beteween this and the Valentino fight, for example. Having said that, he's not the assassin he is in the Marshall footage.

Too bad I can't view youtube vids right now, I remember watching the affair some time back, but not recently, Johnson was built like an ox and looked to have had extremely long arms that seemed to hang below his knee caps.

I wouldnt say there is little footage of him, I have about 3-4 DVDs of him and I dont have the Moore highlights.

The Valentino fight is Charles's best Heavyweight title defence performance (excluding the Walcott and Louis matches) IMO. He really is sharp and accurate in that, I mean his accuracy blew me away.

I think in that fight Charles was reasonably sharp but you have to remember Johnson is alot better than Valentino.

They are very different fights, too. Perhaps that comparison wasn't fair, but like you say, it is maybe the best Charles looked at the weight.

Its my favrouite performance of Charles, at Heavyweight. The way he slowly breaks down Valentino with accurate shots before stopping him in the mid rounds is absoloutly fantastic. Perhaps the closest display to his natural style - I mean the style he favoured as a Light Heavyweight - we have of him at heavyweight.

I just wanted to touch upon your remark about him not being the 'sniper' we see in the Marshall footage. I mentioned in another thread he was an accurate boxer-puncher with solid power and a great offensive arsenal, equally balanced between boxer and puncher. At Heavyweight though I think more emphasis went on BOXER and a little more craft was added to his work, like the way he would launch his accurate combinations - smother a guy - then land afew short shots on the inside.

I'm really loving the Ezzard Charles renaissance that has come through the board.

I think that's a really good post. I'll hold off on Valentino observations until i've seen it again, which is probably going to happen very soon. Right now i'm watching Abraham-Taylor  Not quite on the same level.

Fantastic, I had a look for it the other day as I wanted to share it with the board and show how amazing Charles was in it.

    Thanks.

My memory aint the best so if my observations aint 100% youll know why.

Charles is one of my favrouite fighters these days. The Marshall fight is one of my favrouite such a fury-filled but technically brilliant fight.

Also in regard to Abraham vs Taylor I had Taylor winning going into the last round, what about you?

You're bang on, it's rare to see something so furious and yet so perfect.

I scored it here and had Abraham a round ahead coming into the 12th which is happening....now. Horrible.

It really is brilliant, both men show murderous power and precision. And the left hook that ends it is really a great shot.

I like Jermaine Taylor but his nickname is so innappropriate. Its the one thing he lacks.

It would be like calling Charley Burley. 'Exciting' Charley Burley.

Wow. Based on what? Taylor threw more but nearly every punch landed on Abraham's gloves. Abraham landed more than Taylor and harder shots in every round from round 4 on and he won one of the first four as well, if I remember correctly. Add to that, that he showed the better defence and had Taylor fighting his fight, proving he was the ring general, throughout the fight and I can't see how Taylor was ahead at the time of the stoppage.

I know bad example, I couldnt think of a better version and my brain stuck on it. I wasnt happy about it.

Also we are getting off topic here.

How would you rate this for a Johnson performance? better than his effort over Doug Jones?

Its been a while. And Im not the best fight judge and I was supporting Taylor and I hate Abrahams style. I think I was getting frustrated at Abrahams lack of activity and basically just giving JT rounds to spite AA.

 Burley could be pretty dull, it's a fair shout. I think this is the best i've seen Johnson box.
