When thinking about the top 2 fighters.... Rose had the better wins and the World titles however his career had the shine taken off it by getting beaten by unranked fighters in half of his fights in the last 7 years without any notable wins. Sands also had great wins but didnt lose toward the end...in fact he went out a winner with 25 of his last 26 fights including 2 Comm title's and 2 or 3 aussie titles. Dave had twice as many fights with the same amount of losses and Daves KO record was great...he had more KO's than Rose had fights So for the not so well educated boxing fan (me) can you let me know your thoughts on these 2 great fighters head to head :good
Sands never hit the heights that could have stopped the arguements about his actual ability againstb SRR etc.. Pure common sense and speculation allows us to asume Sands had the wood over all and sundry in the M/W division at the time and for a long time to come. For the most part, SRR was defending against puffy W/W's and being defeated by them also. Sands had brute size as a M/W, not bulked ... but full as a M/W anyway. Like Les Darcy, Sands left too much unfulfilled even though its bloody clear he'd have been the master of most.. unless his own mood got to him first. Lionel accomplished the road to a title in short time.. but there's no way his path was greener or smoother. Rennie pushed Lionel through some tough eraly campaigns like Tiny Palacio and ?? Gonzalez.. Gonzalez had already given Harada hell, so that fight itself was a good measure for Rose if pitted against Harada. Gonzalez may have also given Rudkin some greif?? Anyway, in reaching the level he did, where he did, against who he did and the defended first up against Takeo Sakurai (number 1 contender) immediately, then the LA Latino pitts of hell against Castillo (the best night of Lionels life according to Jack Rennie).. Lionel was held down too long as Bantamweight.. Cutting finger nails, wearing woolen jumbers in LA summer, cutting his hair and spitting into a mobile bucket.. these things took their toll in the short term.. as well as pounding out 15 round wars when drained of all useful energy.. Thats the mark of a Champion. Lionel fulfilled that much. His second career is not littered with duds... Take a good look. Either way, Sands was brilliant as a M/W and remained undefeated at that weight from 48- 52. Lionel way brilliany as a Bantamweight and fulfilled more in that division than anyone should possibly be asked too.
Nice read Flamer , This will inspire me to read those articles you sent me recently , Australia punches above its weight given the size of its population with the aboriginal lads holding their end up in fine style down the years . BTW those Union Ella lads are still talked about in Rugby circles over here ,,Pure Class . ASH ,On a side note its quality seeing you stray from your normal agenda and diving into the past ,these day's youngsters are far to quick in dismissing fighters from a long gone era , The deeper you dig the more you appreciate the fighters of yesteryear and their efforts .
Josey, the legend Rugby League player here - Wally Lewis still rates Koori Mark Ella, former great Wallabies Five-Eighth the best league or union player he ever played alongside. :deal He played Australian schoolboys with Mark Ella and said he was just genius. It's a massive wrap considering we Aussies revered Lewis as the 'King' of Rugby League in his playing days! :good

Mate Mark Ella was one of the finest ever players i ever had the good fortune to watch down the old Cardiff Arms Park , the best i ever saw him play was v US in your 1984 Grand Slam winning side , it was a day that pissed down from morning to night and we got smashed but Cardiff rocked that night i reckon close to 100,000 fans from the UK and Down under was on the lash in "My little town " that night and the only arrests made were for drunk and disorderly , Blokes playing rugby in the street at midnight (50 a side ) pissed as parrots i should know i was one of em .....:good
