Burt,I'm 48 going on 49 and am from Woodside,so I remember Sunnyside Gardens well as I got to see a few there when I was a kid.There has been a Wendy's fast food place on that site for almost 30 years now,but your mention brought back some.Thanks for this thread as you've presented further proof as to why the Classic is far superior to the General.Thanks to you and all of the posters on this thread!:good:good:good

In the spirit of honest discussion, I advocated "endeavoring" for "ideals", not rose-colored nostalgia.

All generations are humanly imperfect. But -I was there- ideals were something to be cherished and aspired to, not mocked. Loutishness was for behind the scenes, not to be worn as a badge of honor.

prime,today boxing fans for the most part do not realize the impact prime Joe Louis had on society,during the war years...We did'nt like him, we LOVED Joe Louis,not only for his greatness as a fighter, but more importantly his demeanor and character...Still 70 years later he is my CHAMPION...

My Dad,rest his soul,had 2 favorite fighters ever:Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.However,the Brown Bomber was easily No1 for him.He told me how upset he,and the men that he was watching the fight with,were when they saw the Rock knock Joe out.He told me he saw grown men with tears in their eyes and that several were seconds away from bombarding the TV with beer bottles.Joe Louis certainly was their,and America's,hero.

 

Was ringside at the Garden for that, C. Broke my heart seein' Joe like a rag doll on the ring apron.

 

Well, Sullivan's loutishness was very public.

In regards to Louis, there is one picture of a boxer hanging in my house. That boxer is Joe Louis.
