Bernard Hopkins is considered to be one of the best boxers in the world. Roy Jones Jr. Once was thought to be the best in the world. However most people beleve him to be shot, well past his prime.
So what diose Hopkins have to gain in beating Jones?
Revenge? Possibily Jones did beat him but that was in 1993. Like I said Most people consider Jones to be shot. Dose beating this version of Jones prove anything for Hopkins who is ranked at 4 in the Ring Pound for Pound rankings?
Lagacy? Beating Jones in 2010 is not going to improve his standing in the pound for pound rankings curently as well as all time.
Money? Jones may be shot and may never win a major fight again but he is a big name and a big draw. Also Hopkins likes to portray himself as a smart bussnes man.
It seems this fight is about the money for Hopkins.

You answered your own question, man. Money and revenge. He gets both the things he wants in this deal. And he's ancient so let him have his indulgence. Ray Leonard had his, Roy's definitely had his.

Definately because of money/revenge, but I do also think there are a few more subtle factors regarding the forming of this fight.

Hopkins is also considered to be past his peak, and I think people are expecting his age to reveal in the course of a single fight. I think because of his own age, Hopkins regards Jones Jr as a legitimate opponent and thus feels the public may take to it more as they also deem it a credible bout.

I actually think Jones Jr is a credible opponent for Hopkins. Though I am expecting Hopkins to win, I don't doubt that a positive mental attitude (from his previous victory) may give Jones Jr a psychological boost coming into the fight, and I think his style may cause Hopkins a few problems. Though he does have a glass chin, Jones still has speed at his disposal and seeing as we've not seen Hopkins take a flush punch for a few years now, we might just see an "upset" (though I'm not expecting 1).

    Yep.

And also, contrary to what many people think, a win over Jones DOES do something for Hopkins' legacy.

Jones is the only man who holds a decisve win against Hopkins. All of his other losses were extremely close and debatable to at least some extent.

If he reverses the only decisive loss on his ledger, this will enhance his status in the eyes of future boxing historians.

What does what Marlon Brando wore on a summer day in 1978 have to do with me pulling a muscle in my leg today?

it sure beats him making a fight with chad dawson...i have all the respect in the world for hop....but i mean...if he was taking on dawson...it would just be a joke really....as much as i respect him....i dont think he has much of anything for chad...and it would just be a waste of our time

It won't do MUCH for his legacy but it will show that he avenged his loss - albeit in the twilight of their careers.

... Oh and money. Plus, I bet he's wanted to hit Jones a few times since their first fight and now he has the chance to do so.

hopkins win over jones means something but when calzaghe beat jones over a year ago that was worthless, i still dont understand how hopkins has recieved a permanent pass through out his carreer, he made a name for himself as a dirty "tactical fighter" boring people to sleep throwing 15 to 20 punch's per round and holding, and positioning himself out of the refs sight to throw headbutts and dirty elbows, i appreciate the skill of a floyd mayweather, even though his fights arent always action packed, but bhop is just plain boring at times, i know this is going to catch flack because for some reason he is deemed untouchable on this site, i dont buy it. His biggest wins are over fighter fighting up 2 or more weight class's from their origina weights ( dlh, tito, wright, pavlik) if you dont count those fights he has 2 big names on his resume, glen johnson and tarver, he made 13 title defenses of a paper trinket against horrib;e comp before beating tito to unify, yet calzaghe is giving flack for no comp and so is floyd, so somebody please explain to me why is hopkins so revered?

simply if he beats Jones he beat the guy who beat him in his first big loss and it puts a period on the 2 fights I suppose- at least in his mind. Regardless, for me Jones won the first fight when both were legit, and that win is much more significant. Nothing Hopkins does in this fight equals it out.

    Revenge.

As soon as Jones lost to Green i still knew he would still get a shot at hopkins because Hopkins wants to settle the score.

Its not about the money as this is not going to draw many PPVs or get the attention of many boxing fans. I think the general boxing fan does not want to see this fight (i am not one of them)

I expect hopkins to get the upper hand and punish jones for 12, rather than go for a KO
