Better Legacy: De La Hoya or Mayweather?

Floyd's legacy is that he was a cherry picker.

Kellerman clearly stated this during the face off and floyd smirked.

 

De La Hoya lost too many big matches. Yeah, yeah, he may have technically beat Trinidad, but his gift decision over Strum negates that.

Not by a wide margin, but I gave it to Mayweather. Mayweather is currently a top 45 ATG, while De La Hoya is a top 50. Like I said...not a wide margin. People give De La Hoya too much credit just for being in big fights. I mean come on, he has to actually win some of them.

What if he beats Mosley, beats Pacquiao and then loses to Pavlik at 160 in his last fight?

Let's wait until he retires (again ) before saying that he "was" anything.

There's always "what ifs" with him, but is he actually going to do it? No.

If floyd beats pac/mosley then he hits a whole nother level, but it has to happen.

 

Mayweather has fought quite a few solid fighters who could have just as easily upset him. Judah, De La Hoya, and (ugh) Ricky Hatton, just to name a few. I slam Floyd a lot, but you got to give the man credit...he beats everyone he is supposed to beat. Upsets are part of boxing, and every fighter in the average top 10 ATG list at some point lost to someone they shouldn't have.

His fight with DLH wasn't big?

 

He gets credit, but it's the appropriate level of credit.
He has the potential to have a better legacy, surely. But does he right now? **** no.

 

De La Hoya, Hatton, Judah, JMM, and even Corrales were relatively big fights, regardless of is they should have been or not. I guess it depends on how you define "big fight", though. But you can't say PBF has fought nothing but scrubs...he has fought several guys that had the potential to upset him.

Possibly the highest grossing bout in boxing history? Whether that was down to De la Hoya or not, it was a big bout.

 

DLH right now ... Floyd is still active ... I can tell you this ... should Mayweather beat Mosley and Pacquiao then he's ahead of DLH in my book. The distance between them isn't that great all around but at 140 and 147 ... DLH has him beat hands down.
