People are looking at the body of work that was accomplished at that weight. I think theres no question Jones would have been a great middleweight had he stayed there. Its not like he left the division because of tough competiton but moreso for the lack of it.
I didn't say I rate Mosley at JWW or Toney at LHW... I don't. I'm just saying that in H2H/"Mythical" Match-Ups, I would pick Mosley to beat plenty of JWWs. I would also pick Toney over some decent LHWs. Jones actually fought at MW and won a World Title there. He also beat some decent fighters at 160. He moved up 8Lbs. and dominated the "Super" MIDDLEweight division. Dude, it's still MW to me!
Maybe to you, not to the rest of the world since it´s above the mw limit. Like I said in another thread. Talent means **** when you don´t prove it against the best. Jones didn´t do it enough to think he could hang in with the best. At least for me.
I don't even rate guys by division very much. Too many weight classes! I just like to pick who would win in H2H prime vs. prime situation. With that said, I'll take Jones over Monzon more times than not.
Hopkins maintained his condition well but I do think hes slower here than earlier in his career, its not drastic more suttle. I've seen those 2 fights, havent see Joppy 1 for a long time though
In some cases I agree and some I dont. I mean Jones was just flat out dominating all the way up through LH. Someone like Kostya Tszyu would have made a **** welterweight in my opinion, and Zab Judah would have most likely accomplished a lot more had he stayed at 140 to give you a couple of examples, but in the case of Jones you can make a good arguement for him, because he stayed so consistent at two higher weight classes.
Hopkins doesnt think he'd win either, thats why hes waited to now to actually fight him. When Jones was LHW champ, Hopkins wouldnt accept the fight for 40% of the purse. When Jones lost to Tarver/Johnson, Hopkins wouldnt fight him for winner takes 60% of the purse. Hopkins was still turning down the fight 2 years ago
I'm not saying Monzon wasn't an all-time great... he was... but I think Jones was much better. You can't always just look at how long a guy was champ or even how many title defenses he made. Sure, it usually means he was great... but it doesn't mean he was the best. As for what Jones did at SMW, LHW, and HW? I'm sorry, it can't be ignored whenever you are discussing Jones. To say it means nothing is ignorant. If Jones would have stepped up in weight and not done well... It would make a difference with what people thought of him as a MW as well. At SMW he was fighting guys that were MWs in the past anyway, they just fought at a higher weight but still at the top of their game. He beat Toney at SMW. Toney was a top MW not too long before and so was Jones. Are you really going to ignore this? Ignoring what he did at SMW is just an attempt to underrate Jones at MW. I don't even care because numbering a guy 1,2,3, etc. in an all-time ranking system is kinda lame to me! Laugh if you want but eventually on a long list it seems that people just start pulling the remaining names out of a hat. Not much usually seperates the top 5 or even 10 guys that come to mind in a division anyway.
On that note... go ahead and rate Monzon in the top 5 for MWs and keep Jones off the list. Who really cares? Now, I ask you this... Jones vs. Monzon... who ya got?
