Slakka is right about McTigue winning an utter gift over Flowers. I dont know that I agree that tommy ducked Flowers. Ive never seen that fight mentioned anywhere as being close to being made but I dont rule it out as a possibility either.

In the Mctigue flowers bout the two judges were wealthy businessmen/merchants who had never judged a prize fight EVER. they were they simply as a promotional gimmick due in large part to this bout being a charity bout. Both men blew the call and it was widely criticized and publicized as such. Thats why Flowers went on to get a title shot against Greb in his next fight. The NYSAC ruled that Greb should defend against Flowers as a direct result of what they saw as a bad decision against Flowers and Flowers winning performance against McTigue.

Speed makes all the difference and Loughran simply did not fight the diversity of styles on the highest level to test him ...no different than if he only fought white fighters today. Would we ay he was the best ? Absolutely not.

The problem with this argument is that it truly is a double edged sword. If you apply this logic to the white fighters then you have to apply to the fighters that were ducked and as such didnt get the opportunity to show their skills against a diversity of styles at the highest level. Kind of sad. Loughran was undeniably great. As where some of the black fighters he never fought.

It's fun that you did not understand that statement. If you go back and try it again, the likelihood is that you will. But the payoff will probably be small.

Dont you think the ethnic make up of the field of fighters has changed since those days ?

I mean, in those days they were lots more good white fighters in America, all those Irish, Jews and Italians, for example, second- and third-generation immigrants etc. etc.

Slakka has provided reports that McTigue did not deserve the verdict.Matt Donellon, has provided reports that say he did.
You pays your money and takes your choice.
I don't know how much experience Bernard Gimbel had as a judge, but he was certainly not unfamiliar with boxing, sparring regularly with Gene Tunney, from 1919 onwards.
He was also an intercollegiate boxing champion himself, so he was hardly a green horn. You make it sound as though Gimbel did not know what he was looking at,yet, in his youth he sparred with.
Philadelphia Jack O Brien, Bob Fitzsimmons,Stanley Ketchel, and Jack Johnson.
Gimbel was elected a Director of MSG in 1927 and Board Chairman in 1947.
Here is a testimony to his honesty."Bernie's reputation for honesty and fair dealing is unsurpassed".FM Flynn President NY Daily News.

I usually broadly agree with your posts ,but I find this one non sensical.

Loughran's resume is one of the most varied in the annals of boxing.

    GIANTS
    Campolo
    Carnera
    Impellittiere

    SWARMERS
    Grebx6
    Walker
    Wiggins

    BOX FIGHTERS

    Sharkeyx2
    Farr
    Schaaf x4
    Braddock
    Downey
    Carpentier
    Stribling x2
    Delaney x2
    Smith x2

    PUNCHERS
    Lomski
    Baer
    Bogash
    Hamas x4

    SOUTH PAWS
    Latzo
    Carrattoli
    Gross
    Maier

    DURABLE TYPES
    Risko
    Uzcudun

    BOXERS
    Slattery
    Emanuel
    McTigue x4
    Tunney

You would be hard pressd to find a boxer who met a more diverse collection of styles ,in 141 fights.
Whatever the colour of their skin.

    Relax!
    A few points;
    1) I'm nobody's buddy
    2) I'm not undecided, i have no doubt Flowers has the concensus
    and
    3) I never said any report favored Mike, I just posted a report that stated some of the crowd approved the decision.
